What does a Stenographic Reporter do
The Stenographic Reported will take and transcribe verbatim shorthand or stenotype notes of victim witness and suspect statements during criminal and other investigations either in the field or in the office and under difficult interrogation and stakeout conditions.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications:

  • Additional stenographic experience beyond the Selection Requirements.
  • A current Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) license issued by the Court Reporters Board of California.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out jobrelated essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS:
Physical Class II Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10pound limit and some bending stooping or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
*To receive credit for your education include a legible copy of your official diploma official transcript or letter/certificate from an accredited institution. The document should show the date the degree was conferred and be in English; if it is in a foreign language it must be translated and evaluated for equivalency to U.S. standards. WITHHOLD INFORMATION:
Individuals with stenographic experience may file for this examination if they are within three (3) months of meeting the experience requirements by the last day of filing. However their names will be withheld from the eligible list until the required experience is fully met.

Additional Information

EXAMINATION CONTENT:
Once we have determined that you qualify our examination process will consist of an evaluation of training and experience based on your responses to the application information desirable qualifications and supplemental questionnaire which is weighted 100%.


The passing score to be placed on the list is 70% or higher.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be placed on the eligible list for a period of six (6) months from the date the list is created.

QUALIFYING BACKGROUND CHECK:
Before a final appointment is made to this position you will be required to complete and pass a thorough background investigation including a Live scan.


Examples of disqualifying factors are:
  • Any criminal charges or convictions
  • Job related misdemeanor convictions
  • Certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations such as three (3) moving violations in one year; failure to appear; atfault accidents; applicant placed on a three (3) year probation
  • Poor credit history
  • Poor employment history
  • Substance abuse
  • Driving under the influence

The list of successful candidates created from this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Los Angeles County District Attorneys Office.


AVAILABLE SHIFT:
Stenographic Reporters are rotated through a variety of developmental assignments incumbents may be assigned to work in any area of Los Angeles County and on any shift (evenings nights and weekends).
