This position is open to Alaskan Residents only.
As a Fingerprint Technician you will perform manual comparisons of inked and digital fingerprints and palm prints as well as conduct examinations using an Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS). Duties include verifying identities preparing detailed reports maintaining accurate records and providing expert testimony in court. You will also deliver training on fingerprint related matters. This position plays a key role in supporting identity verification in criminal and applicant processes.

THE WORKING CONDITIONS YOU CAN EXPECT:

This position is based in East Anchorage at the Department of Public Safety Headquarters surrounded by scenic views of the Chugach Mountains with easy access to parking public transit and nearby trails. Youll work in a shared office space alongside supportive ABIS Unit staff fostering teamwork and collaboration.

Fingerprint Technician 1 Minimum Qualifications (Range 13)
Two years of experience that provided knowledge of handling confidential information adhering to legal procedures and/or performing data analysis as typically found in direct support of commissioned certified or other professional criminal justice or law enforcement staff in the performance of their mission.

Substitution:
Postsecondary education from an accredited college that included 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours in physical science courses such as chemistry biology physics or criminalistics; criminal justice courses such as research methods data analysis or development of law; or legal studies courses such as criminal law and procedure or legal research may be substituted for the required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month).

Special Note:
A background investigation including a criminal record check for convictions of felony crimes or serious misdemeanors is required.

Fingerprint Technician 2 Minimum Qualifications (Range 16)
Completion of a recognized training plan as a Fingerprint Technician 1 with the State of Alaska.

OR

Two years of technical fingerprint classification experience in a law enforcement agency which included fingerprint pattern recognition and fingerprint classification; fingerprint comparisons of inked prints; taking fingerprints; and preparing for court appearances as an expert witness in the science of fingerprints.

OR

A current Latent Print Certification or Tenprint Fingerprint Certification issued by the International Association for Identification.

Special Note:
A background investigation including a criminal record check for convictions of felony crimes or serious misdemeanors is required at the time of initial hire.

Technical fingerprint classification experience is defined as experience requiring the application of the basic technique of fingerprint science in determination of pattern types though ridge counting whorl tracings and use of the Henry Method of Classification.

APSIN/BACKGROUND CHECK

The successful candidate must pass a comprehensive background investigation which includes a criminal history check.This position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). Security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety is necessary to use APSIN. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally a security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application or security clearance.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidates credibly possessed and proven competencies. If hired at the lower level you will be promoted to the higher level after completing the training plan and demonstrating competency in the work.
