The Payments organization at Airbnb enables people anywhere in the world to frictionlessly exchange money with easy to use payments services. It is a core strategy to fulfill Airbnbs mission to belong anywhere. We are building a worldclass payments platform that moves billions of dollars in 191 countries with 75 currencies through a complex ecosystem of payments partners. We build and maintain our own inhouse global payments platform because no solution exists with the global reach needed. As the platform grows well be adding new payment partners global licenses compliance and regulation controls and building new payment experiences for our guests and hosts.
Payments Processing within Payments is the payment gateway and core platform of the Airbnb Payments ecosystem. We are the team that connects Airbnb to the outside world of payment processors for the execution of any payment anywhere reliably accurately conveniently and costeffectively.
The Difference You Will Make
Our platform integrates with 19 different Payments Service Providers and moves billions of dollars on an annual basis. Were looking for an Engineering Manager to build and lead the team that will be responsible for designing architecting and maintaining Airbnb Payment Gateway systems. With our growing expansion of products we see Global and Local Payments methods playing a major role in conversion approval rates and costeffective drivers for Airbnb and this role will help oversee expansion of this platform immediately and over the next several years
A Typical Day
This role requires heavy crosscollaboration with teams across other Platform organizations (Payments Finance Partnership) and functions (Product Management Operations SOX) to inform validate track and influence the implementation and maintenance of the payments platform. This team is currently growing and the scope includes opportunities to build deeper infrastructural services to provide a platform with which we can easily fulfill business requirements and offer payment services to people anywhere in the world in a compliant reliable and costeffective manner.
Core aspects of the role include:
- Setting and communicating strategy and direction of the team to evolve and maintain current payment systems.
- Refining team processes and work divisions to enable effective prioritization planning and communication of the teams sprint commitments
- Building relationships and working rhythms across peers and stakeholders in both India and the US
- Collaborating with organization Staff and Sr. Staff engineers to assist team in aligning architecture tradeoffs
- Coaching and mentoring the team with empathy to do their best work while growing in their roles & responsibilities
- Creating deliberate plans and opportunities for addressing technical debt & quality facilitating learning and encouraging cultural engagement
- Participating in India site level and global initiatives to create a strong Payments organization
Your Expertise
- 35 years of experience as an Engineering Manager with 9 years of industry experience with a BS/Masters or 6 years of industry experience with a PhD
- Strong coding abilities and experience with architectural patterns of large highscale applications.
- Experience architecting building and maintaining highly available services in a large serviceoriented architecture (SOA).
- Familiarity with patterns libraries and frameworks for building and testing services and servicetoservice communication.
- Expertise proactively managing and communicating dependencies across parallel tracks of work and crossfunctional stakeholders
- Demonstrable experience creating expectations coaching and mentorship plans for ICs
- Comfortable independently establishing and validating priorities and direction in the absence of Product Management
- Track record of contributing to Technical Quality practices and roadmaps for the organization
- Experience managing distributed teams of varying experience levels
- Experience managing and interacting with geographically distributed teams and partners is a plus
- Previous experience building payment systems is a plus
Your Location
This position is India Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites as agreed to with your manager.
