TEMPORARY FOR APPROXIMATELY 2 YEARS
Under the direction of the Interim Manager Clinical Services this position is responsible for the safe effective and ethical nursing care. The RPN will provide direct professional nursing care to clients requiring primary and mental health services. As a member of a multidisciplinary health care team the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) provides nursing care within the RPN full scope of practice while also assuming an active role in the smooth operation of CMHA Health Centre as a member of the team
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- The position responsibilities include the following within the scope of practice guidelines provided by the College of Nurses and under the authorization of a team physician or Nurse Practitioner:
- Under authorization of a psychiatrist or physician receives medication orders administers medications including injectable medications where appropriate. Client injections include longacting psychotropic medication vitamin B12 MOHLTC funded vaccines.
- Communicable Disease testing and follow up health assessments.
- Management of medication including receipt and storage of stocked sample medications
- Conducts ongoing assessment and observation for effects and side effects to the prescribed medication. Acting with client consent as liaison with clients psychiatrist/physician. Effectively communicates assessments and concerns regularly with team members and psychiatrists/physicians and collaborates to establish interventions and supports based on client needs and goals.
- Conducts detailed intakes for new clients e.g. vitals medical tests and initial assessment/ triage of primary and mental health concerns.
- Medical procedures such as wound care.
- Order/restock clinic supplies and keep all examination rooms updated with clinic supplies daily.
- Maintenance and quality assurance related to medical equipment and point of care testing.
- Client education e.g. glucometer teaching smoking cessation healthy lifestyles.
- Provider directed client followup e.g. calling clients with test results referral management.
- Assesses needs and values of family where family involvement has been indicated to support link educate and advocate for family as needed. Ensuring family members are aware of available community resources that provide services and support. Where conflicts arise between the wishes of clients and family members family members are referred to as an appropriate alternative service.
- Work in consultation with the CMHA Health Centre/CMHA mental health and health care providers.
- Adhering to standards as set out by the College of Nurses of Ontario and agency Policy and Procedures.
- Following agency procedures and College of Nurses of Ontario Standards regarding documentation of medication orders medication administration and reporting of errors.
- Other duties as assigned and which are within the scope of the position and which further the objectives/goals of the organization.

EDUCATION & SKILLS:
- Requires knowledge and skills acquired through completion of a Registered Practical Nurse Diploma from a recognized postsecondary institution. Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse. Certificate in Mental Health Nursing is a preferred asset.
- Two (2) years clinical nursing experience relevant to the provision of primary and mental health care. Thorough knowledge and proficiency in current nursing physical assessments and treatment methods. Bilingual in French will be considered an asset.
- Advanced clinical knowledge in primary and mental health care knowledge in the development and implementation of policies procedures and educational programs; ability to analyze and interpret valid research findings in clinical practice; ability to work independently and collaboratively with members of the health care team; working knowledge of computers. Knowledge of mental health & relevant legislation preferred. Thorough knowledge of nursing principles procedures and practices in accordance with the Standards of Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario and the regulations of the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
- Computer literacy skills and working knowledge or various Microsoft Windows application is required.
- Bilingualism in both official languages at the advanced level is considered an asset.
- A valid Ontario Drivers License with access to a reliable vehicle and proof of current insurance and licensing are required for this position.
Hours of Work: ThirtyFive (35) hour work week. The agencys regular hours of operation are Monday to Friday 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Flexible hours are required to meet client and service needs.
Salary range: Grade 7 $33.51 $39.62 per hour

Applicable shift premiums are paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement Article 17.11.
