Associate Medical Director
General Summar:
The Associate Medical Director works with the scientific team project managers editorial teams sales/marketing and executive management to ensure the scientific integrity of all medical communications projects and new business endeavors. The Associate Medical Director is responsible for understanding complex clinical and economic data in support of the development of strategic content including payer pharmacy and patient support program advisory boards and other engagements. The Associate Medical Director is responsible for providing direction to other team members in support of the development of quality scientifically accurate branded and unbranded materials. The Associate Medical Director accomplishes this by directing and supporting team members in all phases of activities including researching creating and revising scientific content reviewing content created by other team members and brainstorming business development opportunities. The Associate Medical Director is expected to develop strong and enduring relationships with thought leaders and clients.
Essential Functions:
- Provides leadership motivation and direction to the Scientific Services team as needed
- In conjunction with the accounts team leads account activities and ensures that roles and responsibilities are clearly defined and that standard procedures are followed
- Guides the development of content or independently writes and develops content across a range of medical communications activities and publications in accordance with clientspecific needs
- Effectively briefs all project team members on project descriptions time allocations target audiences and clients key communication points and proactively provide ideas/creative input
- Holds responsibility and accountability for ensuring the scientific quality and content integrity of proposals and content
- Acts as a key resource for account/product/deliverable expertise for the client
- Leads discussions regarding medical content with clients and thought leaders as appropriate
- Demonstrates an understanding of industry best practices and healthcare industry guidelines and actively promotes adherence to the client and other team members
- Understands product/therapeutic area alongside client objectives to proactively provide scientific and strategic insights into communications planning and delivery
- Leads strategic medical projects such as strategic plans designs and moderates workshops (with some senior support) develops scientific platforms and writes strategic medical communications plans as required.
- Interprets and communicates clinical and economic evidence in support of developing materials that provide healthcare decisionmakers with the evidence necessary to evaluate new therapies
- Leads strategic market access projects including payer pharmacy and patient support program engagements and advisory boards
- Leads the development of advisory board content and generates insightful reports
- Leads development of content for peerreviewed and clientsponsored publication supplements
- Participates in business development initiatives to generate new market access business and
- Together with the account team provides recommendations to client in support of the organic growth of existing accounts
- Understands inhouse and/or thirdparty data that are used to provide deeper insights on products/therapy areas/behaviors; uses of such data to support contracted projects and/or new business proposals
- Ensures that clients receive ideas strategic recommendations and robust scientific/clinical input to assist and challenge their thinking and planning
- Actively contributes to and reviews project specifications/cost estimates/reconciliations
- Ensures that any request for outofscope work is communicated to the accounts team
- Supervises some Scientific Services team members and manages freelance medical writers as needed; participates in the screening and interviewing of new candidates for the Scientific Services team and oversees the training and growth of new Scientific Services team members as needed
- Through effective line management drives high performance standards across the business
- Serves as an ambassador for scientific services department at external scientific and industry meetings
- Completes timesheets on a regular and timely basis
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Manages some junior scientific services team members and freelance writers as needed
GENERAL
- Established reputation for excellence scientific authority and leadership with client thought leaders and Scientific Services team
- Ability to analyze and interpret technical scientific information
- Ability to effectively present scientific/medical information
- Ability to multitask prioritize job requirements work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
- Advanced degree in life sciences: PhD PharmD MD DO DPH MPH
- Minimum five (5) years experience in medical communications and market access
- Ability to interpret and convey complex clinical economic and commercial information in assigned therapeutic areas
- Knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry and drug development process
- Experience in and knowledge of market access and health economics concepts
- Knowledge of guidelines related to ACCME PhRMA ICMJE FDA and OIG rules and regulations
Significant involvement (from conception through implementation) in a broad spectrum of medical content deliverables including congress and symposia programming; advisory board meeting content and reports; MSL and other field team materials; interactive spinoff materials; supplements; grand rounds; speaker bureaus content; peer review publications; etc.
COMPUTER SKILLS
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (Word Excel and PowerPoint) and reference manager software
- Willingness to learn new software packages and tools as necessary
MATH / LANGUAGE / REASONING ABILITIES
- Excellent analytical problem solving and communication skills required
- Must be able to work independently and handle multiple high priority projects as well as supporting functions simultaneously and make sound decisions
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills including the ability to interpret and communicate scientific information
TRAVEL
- Must be able to travel domestically and internationally 15 20% of the time including weekends
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Working conditions are typical for an office environment. Requires extensive work using a computer. Responsibilities may require evening and weekend work in response to needs and established deadlines.
