In accordance with the Vision Purpose and Values and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) patient & staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at VIHA; as such the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

The Diabetes Nurse Educator Indigenous Health is responsible for utilizing knowledge and clinical expertise in diabetes education prevention and treatment as well as knowledge of Indigenous culture approaches and protocols. Functions as a clinical resource nurse providing consultation and inservice to physicians other program teams community nurses and other health care team staff regarding the care and treatment of Indigenous people with diabetes. Provides patient assessment and teaching in groups and individual settings in a variety of community settings and with agency staff for a variety of diabetes education needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education Training And Experience

Graduation from a recognized nursing program. Current Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) certification. Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant.

A minimum of three years recent related experience including experience in the care of diabetes and group teaching or an equivalent combination of education training and experience. Experience and proven track record of working with Indigenous peoples and communities with a demonstrated understanding of Indigenous health approaches protocols and cultural issues. Demonstrated knowledge in the current theories technologies and practices in the control of diabetes mellitus. Knowledge of Adult Education learning principles.

Indigenous ancestry preferred.

  • Ability to plan organize and evaluate patient care.
  • Ability to assess learning needs of Indigenous people throughout the lifecycle.
  • Ability to apply the principles of adult learning in individual and group settings.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts including coworkers physicians community agencies representatives patients and families.
  • Ability to adapt and accept change as the program evolves.
  • Ability to deliver culturally sensitive services to the Indigenous populations of Southern Vancouver Island.
  • Possess a valid BC Drivers License.
