Job Duties

Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse Manager to lead a team of RNs LPNs and PCTs (Psychiatric Care Technicians) in providing nursing care to adult psychiatric patients (ages 1864) in a safe and therapeutic environment.

The Registered Nurse Unit Manager works closely with other members of a multidisciplinary treatment team to provide collaborative traumainformed psychiatric care prioritizing care according to patient acuity and managing changes in patient behavior and/or physical condition. The RN Unit Manager supervises a team of nurses and PCTs on their assigned unit and oversees the patient care and operations of that unit to ensure the highest level of patient care. The RN Unit Manager is actively involved in assessing planning implementing and evaluating patient care from the time of admission through discharge and offers supervision and support to nurses and PCTs.

The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental services support individuals by promoting recovery selfdetermination and wellness in all aspects of life. DBHDS operates 12 facilities: 8 behavioral health facilities for adults a training center a psychiatric facility for children and adolescents a medical center and a center for behavioral rehabilitation. State facilities provide highly structured intensive services for individuals with mental illness intellectual disability or need substance use disorder services. This position will work at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute a 72bed Joint Commission accredited State Mental Health Facility located in Danville VA.

Competitive Shift Differentials:
1st shift weekend$5.50 per hour
2nd shiftweekday$5.50 per hour/2nd shift weekend/holidays$6.00 per hour

This is a first shift position that will primarily work MondayFriday 7:00 am until 3:48 pm. This position will require some flexibility in schedules which may include some weekends holidays and/or 2nd/3rd shift hours in rotation with other nurse managers as assigned by the Chief Nursing Officer.

Minimum Qualifications

Current and in good standing Registered Nurse license to practice nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia or license eligible; multistate compact endorsement is accepted.
Graduation from an accredit registered nurse program.
Experience in psychiatric nursing.
Prior supervisory experience.
Valid drivers license is required and must remain valid and in good standing throughout employment.

This position will also require the applicant to be:
Skilled in clinical problem solving and patient management and able to participate effectively in an interdisciplinary team process to treat psychiatric and sometimes aggressive patients.
Leadership supervisory and managerial abilities with effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to mentor and teach others.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multitask and work effectively in a fastpaced environment with constant interruption.
Computer skills and knowledge of and experience with electronic health records.

Additional Considerations

Experience as a Registered Nurse and/or RN supervisor in a psychiatric healthcare facility acute care longterm or correctional setting.
Veterans and people with National Service.
