Department Overview

The purpose of this position is to provide ophthalmic assistance to physicians at the Casey Eye Institute in Bend Oregon and providing ancillary testing as ordered. Duties include but are not limited to working up patients taking histories documenting in medical records triage and prior authorizations. Assist with the administrative components of practices and other department administrative duties as assigned by the manager. This is a fulltime (0.80 FTE) benefited onsite position.

Function/Duties of Position

The Ophthalmic Technician aids physicians by conducting preliminary screening history and testing of patients:

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform preexam testing to include but not limitedto history taking visual acuity assessment confrontational visual fiend testing assess extraocular muscles pupillary evaluation tonometry assess angles pupillary dilation and all other patient services requested by the Physician including special tests such as color vision screening stereopsis etc.
  • Perform testing to include but not limited to refractometry visual fields (GVF & HVF) keratometry ophthalmic photography optical coherence tomography (OCT) etc.
  • Assist with minor surgical procedures or laser treatments in the office
  • Complete requests for prescription refills as authorized by the physician medication prior authorizations triage patient calls and messages.
  • Clean surgical instruments in preparation for sterile processing open and close exam lanes daily monitor medication expiration dates etc.
  • Follow all safety procedures and protocols per hospital guidelines.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited training program such as Ophthalmic Technician Program Ophthalmic Medical Personnel Training Program Eye Care Assistant Program Ophthalmic Assistant Program Ophthalmic Clinical Assistant Program Ophthalmic Medical Assistant Program Ophthalmic Medical Technology.

OR

  • AA in Ophthalmic Technology from an accredited school.

OR

  • Current certification as a certified ophthalmic technician (COA) or higher.

OR

  • BA/BS or in Health Care Science or Research related field AND 1 year of clinical/lab experience conducting preliminary screening/vision testing to include specialized tests and visual fields.

OR

  • 2 years of clinical/lab experience conducting preliminary screening/vision testing to include specialized tests and visual fields.

BLS certification through American Heart Association (AHA) provider level is required at time of hire.Initial certification is the responsibility of the employee. Renewal certification classes/cost provided by OHSU if job required

Preferred Qualifications

COA or COT certification is preferred.

Administrative/medical office experience preferred. Working knowledge of medical terminology highly desireable.

Additional Details

Flexible work schedule determined by the need of the clinic environment. This position is located in Bend Oregon. May occasionally need to travel to Portland or other satellite clinics for meetings/trainings.
