The Decision Scientist role at Ontario Health is an exciting opportunity to join the Data and Decision Sciences (DDS) team within Sector Planning and Capacity Optimization. This position focuses on Health System Modelling & Analytics and requires deep expertise in advanced analytical modeling and operations research to support health system insights and decisionmaking. As a Decision Scientist you will leverage your strong foundation in mathematical programming statistical modeling forecasting simulation modeling and Machine Learning to develop evidencebased tools that inform strategic and operational decisions across the healthcare system. You will work collaboratively with clinical and business programs and senior leadership at Ontario Health acting as a trusted advisor in advancing access quality sustainability and patient experience across the province.
In this role you will contribute to DDSled initiatives by developing predictive and prescriptive models supporting analytics efforts and conducting statistical inference using observational data. You will also support or lead AI and Machine Learning projects playing a key role in building models that uncover patterns predict clinical and business outcomes and recommend actions under a range of future scenarios. Here is what you will be doing:
Develop evidencebased tools using mathematical programming statistical modeling forecasting simulation modeling and Machine Learning.
Collaborate with clinical and business programs and senior leadership to enhance access quality sustainability and patient experience across Ontario.
Lead and support AI and Machine Learning projects building models that uncover patterns predict outcomes and recommend actions.
Present analytical methods and actionable insights to diverse audiences including technical teams clinical experts and senior leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and implement data analyses and modeling projects.
Translate complex clinical and business questions into analytical frameworks.
Develop datadriven solutions and deploy results for operational use.
Build validate and refine models to evaluate planning and policy scenarios.
Integrate data science products into broader decision science frameworks.
Apply advanced machine learning and statistical techniques to support decisionmaking.
Identify and implement emerging AI/ML approaches to enhance health system performance.
Communicate complex data and insights using data visualization tools.
Provide strategic technical and analytical guidance to colleagues and stakeholders.
Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external partners.
Here is what you will need to be successful:
Education and Experience
Masters or PhD degree in Data Science Operations Research Operations Management Applied Mathematics or a related field; PhD preferred.
Minimum of 4 years of experience designing developing and implementing analytical or operations research modeling solutions preferably in a healthcare setting.
Demonstrated experience with advanced modeling techniques including simulation optimization and forecasting to support decisionmaking.
Proven track record of delivering practical decisionsupport tools that are actively used in realworld health system contexts.
Significant experience in working with linking and analyzing large and complex datasets.
Proficiency in programming languages and tools including Python R and SQL is required.
Experience leading large and complex analytical initiatives ideally within provinciallevel health system planning and resource allocation.
Direct experience working with Ontario healthcare datasets (e.g. DAD NACRS NRS CCRS OHIP WTIS RPDB clinical registries) is a strong asset.
Experience in developing and applying machine learning and AI solutions (e.g. predictive modeling clustering natural language processing) is considered an asset.
Knowledge and Skills
Deep knowledge of advanced analytical methods including discrete event simulation Monte Carlo simulation forecasting optimization and statistical modeling.
Understanding of machine learning algorithms and their application in healthcare analytics.
Knowledge of Ontarios healthcare system including its organizational structure data ecosystem and planning processes.
Excellent problemsolving and critical thinking skills including the ability to tackle ambiguous and complex challenges.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing highquality reliable work.
Proven ability to work independently while also contributing effectively to crossfunctional and collaborative team environments.
Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to convey complex analytical concepts to diverse audiences including senior decisionmakers.
