Job Description

JOB GOAL:

The dental assistant supports the premise that every student is entitled to a Free and Appropriate Education by providing expertise and oversight for the provision of school health services and the promotion of health education allowing the student to develop capacity for lifelong achievement and optimum health.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

10.25month (210 day) Salary Range: 107 ($21182 $36805) Salary is based on a 4day workweek plus Benefits Package. NOTE: Precise placement within the salary range will be determined based upon education and experience. FLSA: Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. License: Must hold Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) certification from a program that is accredited by the Commission on Dental Assisting and approved by the Arkansas State Board of Dental Examiners.
  2. Education: Education level must be within accordance with federal state and local guidelines High School diploma or equivalent.
  3. Experience: A minimum of five years of experience as a Dental Assistant in areas such as pediatric dental care. In addition dental assistants must have skills to assist in providing comprehensive dental care to children.
  4. Certification: Current Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) certification from a program that is accredited by the Commission on Dental Assisting and approved by the Arkansas State Board of Dental Examiners. Nitrous Oxide and Coronal Polishing Certifications. Must have or obtain within 6 months of employment with LRSD certification in CPR and Standard First Aid.
  5. Customer Service Skills: Must be capable of interacting effectively with administrators teachers staff members students parents and the general public using respectful tactful and helpful customer service.

Such alternatives and additions to the above qualifications may be deemed appropriate by the Superintendent. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following statements of duties and responsibilities describe the general nature and level of work by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required within this position.

  1. Assist dentist in examination and treatment of patients including application of topical agents removal of dental dressings and sutures;
  2. Assist in the administration of sedation;
  3. Take xrays and bring up results;
  4. Take medical history and prepare patient charts;
  5. Prepare operatories; lay out instruments and supplies; set up sterile trays;
  6. Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of equipment instruments and working areas;
  7. Check and maintain equipment for proper functioning; sharpen instruments;
  8. Prepare patients for treatment and examination; answer routine questions;
  9. Instruct patients in oral hygiene and dental care;
  10. Perform clerical activities related to dental clinic operation; schedule and confirm appointments; contact parents before and after appointments and answer questions regarding treatment and followup needs; file and sort records take inventories and maintain supplies;
  11. Maintain records of treatment provided to patients; prepare Medicaid forms;
  12. Participate in annual dental screenings at multiple sites.
  13. Submits the necessary reports as directed by the Health Services Coordinator in compliance with Arkansas Department of Education Arkansas Department of Health and LRSD.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned including accepting assignment at other schools as needed for the purpose of providing medical care to students.

Mental Functions Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit stand walk go up and down stairs operate foot and hand controls use a telephone and write. Occasionally the employee must lift and move up to twenty (20) or more pounds. In addition this position requires accurately perceiving sound near and far vision depth perception handling and working with educational materials and objects and providing oral information. Must have the ability to work for the duration of the daily contracted time and be physically present and at assigned work with only infrequent unexcused absences during the contract year. Additional technical skills knowledge and abilities may be recommended by the immediate supervisor and approved by the Human Resources Director.
