Job Description
The University of Nevada Reno Honors College is seeking to hire one Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) to teach introductory honors seminars under the supervision of a lead honors faculty member and the Honors College Associate Dean.
The Honors College is the fastest growing college at the University of Nevada Reno and expects to welcome 300 firstyear students in fall 2025. All firstyear students are required to complete HON 109 a onecredit firstyear experience discussionbased seminar that emphasizes critical thinking engagement with diverse primary source texts communitybuilding and personal and professional development.
As the Honors College is an umbrella college that serves highperforming undergraduate students with any major all HON prefix courses are interdisciplinary; thus GTAs may have any disciplinary background.
The Honors College recognizes that GTAs are above all else students. To that end GTAs have access to a faculty mentoring program that includes regular meetings teaching observations and incentives and opportunities for professional development.
Responsibilities:
GTAs along with a lead honors faculty and the Honors College Associate Dean will teach HON 109 in fall and spring semesters.
GTAs may have the opportunity to teach an upper division honors seminar of their own design in the spring.
GTAs will join a teaching team that includes other faculty GTAs and undergraduate TAs.
GTAs will hold weekly office hours in a shared GTA office space in the Honors College.
GTAs will attend regular faculty check ins monthly AllCollege meetings HonorsFit (a oneday honors orientation for incoming students) and the Honors Faculty Retreat (a oneday introduction to the Honors College for all faculty).
Opportunities for summer teaching are possible.
Required Qualifications
Candidate must be enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Nevada Reno.
Candidate must be active in a degreeseeking program.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience as an instructor teaching assistant discussion leader or academic mentor.
Experience and/or knowledge of honors education or other special educational programs for highperforming students.
