Job Description

Student Health and WellBeing (SHWB) Mental Health Services at Johns Hopkins University seeks an energetic organized and motivated Sr Mental Health Services (MHS) Clinician Chat with a Counselor Program Coordinator to work in a dynamic and fastpaced environment focused on delivering innovative mental healthcare and supporting the wellbeing of a diverse community of learners.


The Senior Mental Health Services Clinician Chat with a Counselor Program Coordinator is part of an interdisciplinary team of clinicians providing clinical and outreach services to undergraduate graduate and professional students and learners across Johns Hopkins University.


Senior Clinicians within Mental Health Services participate in the full range of clinical service delivery and hold other responsibilities including program coordination supervision of 12 staff and/or interns and professional development activities commensurate with their levels of experience. As a Chat with a Counselor Program Coordinator this clinician will lead the coordination of liaisons who provide outreach to populations that are historically underrepresented in the utilization of traditional mental healthcare.


All MHS clinicians work collaboratively with psychiatry primary care and health promotion staff to provide care that emphasizes holistic wellness and mental wellbeing and that leverages students resilience and other key skills. Clinicians work collaboratively with campus partners across the University through outreach and liaison activities.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • This positions direct clinical service and supervisory responsibilities will be primarily based at the Homewood and East Baltimore clinics but may provide virtual or inperson services supervision or have occasional reporting requirements at other locations in Maryland or Washington D.C. See minimum qualifications for required timeframes for licensure. Jurisdictions requiredMaryland and Washington D.C.
  • Percentages of duties and responsibilities are given as a general guideline and will vary depending on the time of year needs of the clinical service and program coordination responsibilities.


Chat with a Counselor Program Oversight (1020%)

  • Manages the Mental Health Services liaison program including Chat with a Counselor schedule and marketing strategies; supports liaisons with connecting to student groups and serves as primary MHS liaison to the Center for Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Serves as primary liaison to the Vivien Thomas Scholars initiative; delivers programs and consultation to program leadership and scholar participants.
  • Engages various campus stakeholders and student groups to determine needs for Chat with a Counselor initiative and works with MHS staff to develop content to meet these needs.
  • Coordinates quarterly professional development training seminar with a particular focus on supporting populations that are historically underrepresented in traditional mental health services.
  • Leads a monthly consultation group for clinicians providing Chat and liaison services.
  • Develops implements and utilizes evaluation feedback for Chat with a Counselor and liaison services to inform future offerings.
  • Remains abreast of current literature and research on student behavioral health and evidencebased intervention strategies with a particular focus on health equity.


Supervision and Leadership Development (1020%)

  • Supervises 12 clinical staff and/or psychology doctoral interns through goal setting performance evaluations and accountability management.
  • Provides clinical supervision and ensures that supervisees are delivering highquality mental health services and practicing within MHS guidelines; intern supervision includes review of tapes leading didactic seminars and participation in training program activities.
  • Participates in recruitment hiring and training processes for clinical staff and interns.
  • Contributes to staff development engagement and teambuilding activities and actively participates in MHSwide events.


Direct Clinical Service (5060%)

  • Creates a warm and welcoming clinical environment where clients feel supported and respected as they pursue their personal academic and professional goals.
  • Provides multiculturally informed direct clinical services including initial consultations intake assessments singlesession consultation goaloriented individual and group therapy and risk assessments.
  • Utilizes both flexible and goaloriented approaches to individual treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy dialectical behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy often in collaboration with psychiatric providers.
  • Collaborates with providers within SHWB as an interdisciplinary treatment team including therapists psychiatric providers primary care clinicians case management and disability services staff.
  • Provides clinical case management to support connections to appropriate resources and bridge clients to care.
  • Consults as appropriate with providers in the community to facilitate continuity of care.


Outreach (1020%)

  • Engages in opportunities for informal interactions with students to reduce barriers to counseling which may include offering dropin and chat hours attending student events orientation resource fairs and participating in a range of studentled and studentfocused programs.
  • Contributes to content for MHS social media and website content.
  • Serves as liaison to the Center for Diversity and Inclusion to enhance relationships with student groups faculty staff and trainees; range of activities may include needs assessment embedded chat or dropin hours facilitating skills training or workshops consultation etc.


Special Knowledge Skills or Abilities

  • Specialized training or experience with outreach to populations that are historically underrepresented in the utilization of mental healthcare.
  • Clinical experience with concerns prevalent within the student and learner population is strongly preferred (e.g. identity development trauma anxiety mood disorders disordered eating cooccurring substance use disorders sleep disorders and ADHD).
  • Experience independently executing psychoeducational presentations programs and events.
  • Bilingual proficiency is highly desirable.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters Degree in counseling psychology or social work from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years of postgraduate clinical experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year of clinical supervisory experience.
  • Licensed as a mental health provider in required jurisdiction(s) noted in job description (psychologist LMFT LCPC LCSWC) or licenseeligible (licensed as a mental health provider in another jurisdiction must obtain licensure in required jurisdiction(s) within 6 months of hire).


Substitution/Equivalency

  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D. Psy.D. DSW or equivalent) in a relevant clinical discipline from an accredited program and completion of an accredited internship. If eligibility is based on a doctoral degree a minimum of three years of postgraduate experience and two or more years of licensure as a psychologist or boardapproved status as a social worker or professional counselor is required to meet the minimum qualifications.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral Degree (DSW Ph.D. Psy.D. or relevant terminal degree) from an accredited program.
  • Experience with APAapproved doctoral training programs as a clinical supervisor and familiarity with the compliance requirements for accreditation of APAapproved internships in health service psychology.
  • Clinical experience in a university setting strongly preferred.
