SUMMARY
The Cook prepares and cooks large quantities of food and is responsible in conjunction with other team members for the preparation and serving of breakfast lunch and/or dinner as well as all operations entailed therein. This person is expected to behave in a manner that demonstrates our Core Values: radically inclusive just and loving exemplary customer service outstanding job performance peaceful problem resolution and respectful client management.
Work responsibilities will (at times) require long days evenings holidaysand/or weekends.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • With team members lead all facets of a serving working kitchen. Work in collaboration with others to ensure efficient operations;
    • Prepare meals and follow recipes. Clean cut Prepare and cook meat fish or poultry;
    • Cook foodstuffs according to menus special dietary or nutritional restrictions or numbers of portions to be served. Observe and test foods being cooked by tasting and smelling to determine if food is cooked correctly;
    • Compile and maintain records of food temperatures and safety logs.
    • Ensure food portions on trays are presentable and of the correct serving size as required by contractual obligations amount;
    • Oversee those assisting with food preparation before during and after meal service;
    • Inspect food preparation and serving areas to ensure observance of safe sanitary foodhandling practices are followed.
    • Consistently manage food rotation FIFO and use of donated food items in order to eliminate food waste;
    • Clean and inspect kitchen equipment and appliances and work areas to ensure cleanliness and functional operation. Ensure the main dining room kitchen all floors and tables are in working order an orderly clean condition and sanitized throughout the shift day;
    • Clear and reset counters and tables at conclusion of shift. Clean and sanitize the serving area and main dining room (counter tops and bottom shelves) equipment and utensils sweep and mop floors;
    • Sort and remove trash placing it in designated pickup areas. Clean garbage cans with water or steam. Ensure all Daily Free Meals Program workers are following the correct procedures of the Recycling Program; Protocol
    • Follow the Daily Free Meals Programs Health & Safety rules Protocols during the working shifts at all times;

Minimum Qualifications:

    • Job requires maintaining composure keeping emotions in check controlling anger and avoiding aggressive behavior when responding to high intensity situations.
    • Ability to work under constant pressure to serve meals quickly while ensuring quality is maintained and safety and sanitation guidelines are followed and observed;
    • Dependability. The job requires being reliable and ontime accountable and able to fulfill responsibilities; in a time sensitive manner.
    • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and displaying a goodnatured cooperative attitude with clients.
    • Exercises sound judgment in interactions with others. Must be able to deal with difficult individuals (e.g. angry loud and/or verbally abusive) in a skilled manner;
    • Flexible and accommodating; using sound judgment in charged situations.
    • Has the ability to work effectively across cultures. Demonstrates a commitment to learning communicating and working respectfully with people different from themselves;
    • Commitment to GLIDEs mission values and philosophy.
    • Any combination of education training and/or hands on experience.
    • Teamwork skills essential. Experience directing/leading others along with deescalation skills are helpful.

Licenses or Certificates:

    • Must pass Tuberculosis screening
    • Must hold a CA Food Handlers card as required by the state.

Physical Requirements:

    • Hearing and Vision corrected in normal range;
    • Ability to communicate effectively in a manner which can be understood by those with whom the person is speaking;
    • This person will be required to perform manual labor within conditions that are sometimes less than ideal. Ability to perform repetitive physical activities (for up to 8 hours per day) that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body such as bending twisting lifting and walking;
    • Trunk strength. The ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles repeatedly or continuously over time without giving out or fatiguing;
    • Ability to stand for extended periods 90% of time standing and 10% sitting.
    • Must possess strength stamina and ability to climb multiple flights of stairs safely and repeatedly. Ability to navigate stairs with heavy loads in hands or with equipment throughout the work day;
    • Use hands and arms to handle position and move materials and manipulate things on a constant basis for up to 8 hours;
    • Frequent lifting of food containers foodstuff and pots weighing up to 50 pounds is required. Must possess the ability to independently and safely lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds for extended periods (up to 1 hour) and heavier weights with the use of equipment or assistance from others.
$25 $28 an hour
This is a fulltime (40 hour/week) NonExempt position. This role is covered by the collective bargaining agreement.
