Job Description

IMC is currently looking to hire a Lactation Consultant Nurse (RN) on a PRN basis. Under the generalsupervision of the Unit Director and with the authority of the Chief NursingOfficer nurses deliver care to patients utilizing the nursing process ofassessment planning intervention implementation and evaluation inaccordance with established philosophy. The Lactation Consultant Nurse specializes in breastfeeding and lactation support.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate of state approved RN School of Nursing BSN Preferred.
  • Current LouisianaLicensure as a Registered Nurse required.
  • Current Certification by International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLC)
  • BLS (CPR) uponhire
  • NRP certificationwithin 6 months of employment
  • ACLS certificationwithin 1year post hire for those providing postoperative care
  • PALScertification preferred within 1year post hire of employment

EXPERIENCE:

  • At least two yearsof nursing experience in labor & delivery maternal child is preferred.
  • Preferred atleast 1year experience in Lactation Consultation

PRINCIPLE TASKS DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supports the mothers and newborns with breastfeeding by providing lactation assessment management education instruction and support.
  • Performs a complete nursing assessment with a special focus on the adaptation to motherbaby dyad and transition to parenthood to establish and prioritize nursing diagnoses to create an individualized evidencebased plan of care.
  • Assess human responses and adaptation to actual or potential health problems of the maternal newborn pediatric and gynecologic patient family and/or significant other.
  • Provides patientcentered care to address physical spiritual psychosocial developmental cultural and educational needs of the mothers newborns and pediatric patients and designated family members in accordance with the plan of care hospital policy state and national regulations and recommendations and guidelines of the professional organizations.
  • Recognizes current and emerging highrisk obstetrical conditions and emergencies in order to respond timely and appropriately to provide the highest quality care for the mothers and newborns.
  • Stabilizes the highrisk maternal newborn or pediatric patients for transport as appropriate.
  • Manages nursing care for obstetrical patients with common complications of the perinatal period.
  • Administers highrisk medications in accordance with established protocols policies and procedures to obstetrical patients to promote optimal maternal newborn outcomes.
  • Identifies patient and family education needs and in collaboration with other disciplines initiates education needs according to the age of the patient.
  • Provides appropriate referrals and individualized information regarding postdischarge community resources
  • Communicates with patients families and multidisciplinary team members both verbally and in writing to enhance teamwork and promote safety security and improved maternal newborn gynecologic and pediatric outcomes.
  • Delegates nursing care to licensed and unlicensed staff based on the staff members knowledge education competency and ability to successfully perform the task/assignment.
  • Participates in discharge planning; provides instruction to patient/family.
  • Maintains and promotes professional standards and development by participating in inservices committees staff meetings and department and hospital performance improvement activities.
  • Serve on the Safe Birth Initiative and GIFT task force. Assisting in chart auditing attending meetings providing and partaking in education required and inputting data for designation.
  • Plans implements supervises and evaluates needs of the breastfeeding infant.
  • Provides consultative services to mothers during prenatal antenatal and postpartum phase as needed.
  • Provides support education and resources as needed to the breastfeeding mom during infants hospitalization with follow up as needed after discharge
  • Assists Maternal Child staff with tasks as needed (assessments first breastfeeding visits discharges)
