  • Grade 12 (or equivalent education) or higher
  • Certified Alberta Journeyperson (Red Seal) in the trade of Heavy Duty or Automotive Mechanic supplemented by a certificate of completion of required coursework in electronics and electrical theory
  • Experience working in the fleet maintenance industry with electrically powered vehicles including diagnosing and correcting difficult complex and/or unusual vehicle malfunctions

Skills required for success:

  • Considerable knowledge of the standards methods materials tools and equipment used in this trade
  • Knowledge of mechanical electrical and electronic principles
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of a shop environment
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical electronic and mechanical drawings and manufacturers manuals
  • Ability to perform diagnostic work and identify problems with vehicles components and auxiliary equipment
  • Ability to maintain basic records including time sheets and job notes
  • Skill in the use and care of the tools equipment and materials of the trade
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to develop strong relationships and work in a collaborative integrated manner
  • Excellent communication interpersonal and customer service skills

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Motor Vehicle Operators License (or provincial equivalent). Ability to obtain and maintain a City driving permit
  • Upon hire the candidate must obtain and maintain an LRT A Book License to operate Light Rail Transit Vehicles which is provided by the City of Edmonton
  • Candidates will be required to take a pre-employment Functional Abilities Assessment Evaluation (F.A.R.E. test) that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Compliance with the City of Edmontons safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
  • Applicants may be tested
  • Note: This position is strictly paid on an hourly basis

Work Environment:

  • Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform heavy manual labour in various weather and environmental conditions is required
  • Successful candidates will initially be required to work night and weekend shifts until enough union seniority is accrued. This contributes to the essential 24/7 operation of our transit system
  • Three shift sign-ups are held each year and staff have the ability to choose their shift based on seniority and shift availability

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week. We offer 10-hour shifts from 3:00 pm- 1:30 am or 8:00 pm-630 am. Must be available to work nights and weekends. A shift differential will apply to some shifts.

Salary:

  • Training Rate: $49.79 Hourly (Approximately 1 year)
  • Post Training Rate: $52.78 (Hourly); $107010.000 (Annually)
  • The union contract is currently being reviewed. These rates are subject to change

What will you do

  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections
  • Repair overhaul service inspect/commission new equipment/attachments and diagnose the complete range of mechanical electrical hydraulic pneumatic structural and all other failures occurring to light rail vehicles equipment components and attachments common to light rail vehicle fleets
  • Recover and/or perform emergency repairs to failed electric transit vehicles on-line
  • Complete changeovers on-line and track test light rail vehicles
  • Carry out modifications to electric transit vehicles
  • Review Branch maintenance information systems manuals and handbooks in order to accurately diagnose repair and request parts for the jobs assigned
  • Complete the required administrative procedures and forms to ensure the proper recording and communication of work recommended and/or completed
  • Use Fleet Management System Software (SAP) to perform data entry and time entry
  • Attend and participate in health and safety training and meetings
  • Perform testing to support failure analysis by maintenance engineering personnel
  • Perform other related duties as required
