Job Description

Position Description:

The Department of Medicine Division of Hematology and Oncology is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to support the Bone Marrow Transplant/Cellular Therapy/Clinical Trial patients the Inpatient services located in Milwaukee Wisconsin at Froedtert Hospital and the Center for Advanced Care.

Our exceptionally talented team of MD and PhD faculty advanced practice providers nurses research and administrative staff are focused on patient centered clinical care and research in the pursuit of better therapies for cancer and blood disorders. Our expertise extends to all aspects of medical oncology including treatment of solid tumors hematologic (blood) cancers bone marrow transplantation and cellular therapies. We also strive to provide excellent care for noncancerous blood diseases including bleeding and clotting disorders.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration patient care patient safety research quality improvement and teaching.

The Ideal Candidate will be an experienced APP or Clinician with a background in HemOnc/BMT within an inpatient or hospital setting who wants to be part of a thriving and very collaborative academic practice at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW).

In this role you will:

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring Hematology/Oncology/BMT intervention in inpatient environment as a member of the HemOnc/BMT inpatient service at Froedtert Hospital Center for Advanced Care Day Hospital and our 24/7 Clinic.
  • Evaluate quality outcomes for the patients receiving care of this team through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.
  • Facilitate and communicates with patient family and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
  • Provide initial assessment and management of urgent care issues related to internal medicine or critical care needs. Provide postadmission assessments during designated hours.
  • Assume inhouse first call for the 24hour Clinic and the Hematology/Oncology/BMT inpatient units during designated coverage hours and respond promptly to all pages and questions related to the care of patients in assigned inpatient services.
  • Participate in signout activities from the daytime care team and sign off to the night team at midnight following completion of shift.
  • Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements including those of the privileging institution CMS and the Joint Commission.
  • Participates in ongoing clinical research projects related to the field of hematology/oncology/BMT.

Core Advanced Practice Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive histories and physical exams identifies normal and abnormal findings including physical cognitive and psychosocial status.
  • Order perform and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests and appropriately communicates and documents information
  • Write accurate and timely progress notes procedure notes and/or admission and transfer orders
  • Develop pharmaceutical and nonpharmaceutical treatment plans.
  • Monitor effectiveness of plan of care
  • Educate patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Perform procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  • Document within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  • Collaborate and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Educates counsels and assists patients and families regarding current health problems health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.
  • Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements including those of the privileging institution CMS and the Joint Commission.
  • Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field through educational programs inservices professional associates and current literature.

Anticipated Schedule:

  • 2nd Swing Shift MondayThursday 2:00 PM12:00 AM Friday 2:00 PM10:00 PM and Saturday/Sunday 7:00 AM7:00 PM
  • 7 on /7 off (one week on one week off) Alternating Schedule

Position Requirements:

Preferred Experience:

  • Fiveyear experience as a Physician Assistant/ Nurse Practitioner with at least 12 years in a clinic or hospital environment working with chemotherapy or hematology/oncology/BMT patients OR within Critical Care Urgent Care ED or ICU environments
  • Internal medicine knowledge and skills preferred
  • Previous RN experience and/or New Grad with Strong interest in HemOnc/BMT are encouraged to apply

Minimum Education:

Advanced Practice Nurse: Masters Degree or higher in Nursing
Physician Assistant: Bachelors Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies
