Reporting to the HVAC Supervisor this position is located at a multi-custody male correctional facility and works in the Maintenance Department. This position may work with and have frequent contact with close custody and minimum custody offenders. This positions job responsibilities include but not limited to the following:
- Providing journey level work in the areas of Heating/Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC).
- Designing installing servicing and repairing HVAC energy control management systems in renovations and construction.
- Assisting in installing electrical conduit and wiring for HVAC electricals circuits.
- Performing preventive maintenance.
- Instructing lower level assistants and offenders in performing less technical repairs.
- Providing technical guidance and supporting to other staff members in HVAC energy control management system.
- Working by instruction from supervisor by policies the NC building code manuals OSHA regulations and safety policies.
- Requiring great physical effort in the installation repair and removal of HVAC systems.
- Performing repairs on equipment outside his/her specialty trade as needed and must be diversified and have general knowledge of several trades.

The salary grade for this position isNC08(Salary Range:$37782 - $66120). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.
About Central Prison:
Central Prison in Raleigh NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations including death row and safe-keepers.
While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings Bible studies or worship services.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Effective July 1 2025 candidates now must meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the Minimum Education and Experience listed from the OSHR class specification as seen in the next section below. The Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs) listed here in this section are now to be used as Management Preferencesand to be used to screen for the MOST QUALIFIED pool of applicants.
Management Preferences
- Documented working experience in the field of Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma ANDthree years of progressive experience in the installation maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers air handling chilled water distribution and control systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: REQUIREScurrent certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I II III or Universal technician as required by Title 40 Code of Federal Regulations part 82 subpart F.
