Job Description

The Institute of Computer Data and Information Sciences is designed to foster collaboration and coordination among relevant departments and divisions at The University of Akron (UA).

The Founding Director will be responsible for leading the buildout from the ground up including developing and executing the Institutes strategic plan driving the coordinated and collaborative curricula and creating synergies across campus and beyond with other schools alumni and key partners to move priorities forward. The successful candidate will have strong leadership skills work in a collaborative manner and will have an academic or corporate research background.

As the Founding Director of the new Institute of Computer Data and Information Sciences (ICDIS) this is a tremendous opportunity for a visionary leader to build and shape the trajectory of this emerging Institute) ICDIS is well resourced and supported to propel growth and elevate research initiatives. At the forefront of this innovation UA has been a pioneer in the areas of cybersecurity and cyberforensics data and information science and artificial intelligence and is now focused on establishing the Institute to support these growing areas.

This position reports directly to the Provost. The Director will work directly with the chairs of the relevant departments. There is no teaching requirement but it is available based on the Directors preference. Tenure within a department is possible with eligible and appropriate credentials and experience and is subject to departmental guidelines and approvals.

Additional Position Information:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • An M.S. in Computer Science Management Information Systems Cyber Forensics Mathematics Statistics Data Science or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Six years working experience in related computer fields including three years of relevant managerial and leadership experience. This may include academic government laboratory or corporate R&D.
  • A track record of obtaining funding.
  • The ability to build bridges between academic units and to facilitate interdisciplinary collaborative activities.
  • A commitment to building a strong highquality learning environment for students.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong financial management skills with the ability to manage finances communicate university and college priorities to the faculty in terms of budget alignment and align strategic initiatives with long term planning.
  • Ability to develop support and engagement for academic priorities.
  • Ability to develop and work with advisory boards and program donors.
  • Ability to work with industries on funding opportunities including research workforce development short courses certificates etc.
  • Ability to lead the development of the relevant academic programs.
  • Ability to lead the effort to outfit and use available resources and technologies.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in a related field
  • Experience with curriculum development.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to develop a strategic plan for the Institute consistent with university goals.
  • A commitment to the academic and professional community through service and engagement.
  • A commitment to the recruitment and retention of undergraduate and graduate students.
