Job Description

The Biosciences and Biotechnology Division within the Physical and Life Sciences Directorate LLNL is seeking to fill a position for a dedicated and hardworking Research Scientist with a background in cell biology with a cardiac focus with demonstrated experience in advanced cellular and tissue models toxicology electrocardiography and in vivo assessments. In this position you will direct and conduct advanced cell and animal biology research contributing to our understanding tissue and cell level effects of physiological insults for mission relevant programs. Your role will involve working on defined research projects where you will be expected to demonstrate initiative resourcefulness and a keen attention to detail within a multidisciplinary team of scientists. This position is in the Human Health Sciences Group in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.

This position requires fulltime onsite presence due to the nature of the work.

You will 

  • Lead and implement in vitro experiments that include both 2D and 3D rat and human cardiac cell models.
  • Collaborate with other scientists for in vivo experiments.
  • Utilize advanced cell and molecular biology techniques to investigate and understand mechanisms of cellular injury and repair in cardiac tissues.
  • Evaluate large data sets to refine inform and design subsequent experiments.
  • Conduct literature reviews on stateoftheart approaches relevant to the problem being addressed.
  • Train and mentor early career and technician level staff.
  • Collaborate and interact with interorganizational contacts and/or external customers.
  • Prepare and present technical reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Qlevel security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Ph.D. in Cell Biology or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Significant experience with human and rat cell cultures with an emphasis on cardiac cells and tissue models.
  • Significant experience with electrophysiology immunostaining flow cytometry and multiomics (emphasis on singlecell RNA sequencing).
  • Significant experience with in vivo assessments of cardiac function including electrocardiography.
  • Significant experience in elucidating mechanisms of cellular or tissue disfunction.
  • Proficiency in R or equivalent for data analyses.
  • Advanced understanding of statistics for longitudinal datasets.
  • Practical experience with multiomics sample preparation and analyses.
  • Experience in a fastpaced environment and able to work both independently and as a team with a diverse set of scientists engineers and other technical and administrative staff.
  • Proficient with common software (e.g. Microsoft Office applications) and able to quickly learn new software.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with histology and immunohistochemistry.
  • Experience with hematology and clinical chemistry.

This is a Flexible Term appointment which is for a definite period not to exceed six years.  If final candidate is a Career Indefinite employee Career Indefinite status may be maintained (should funding allow).
