Job Description

We have an opening for a Radiation Calibration and Spectroscopy (RCS) Group Leader to lead the RSC laboratories within the Analytical Services & Instrumentation Division of the Technical Services Department in the Environment Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate. This role is essential to ensuring LLNL maintains robust compliant and missionenabling radiation calibration and spectroscopy capabilities.  You will provide technical leadership and strategic oversight for a team of spectroscopists scientific associates technicians and health physicists delivering radiation instrument calibration spectroscopic measurement and wholebody counting services in support of LLNLs radiation protection program.

This position requires fulltime onsite presence due to the nature of the work.

You Will

  • Lead the RCS laboratories to provide comprehensive technical expertise and direction for spectroscopy radiation instrumentation calibration and whole body counting for LLNLs radiation protection program. This includes assessing internal uptake or radionuclides calibrations of handheld radiation monitoring instrumentation to US Department Of Energy (DOE) standards as well as operating whole body gamma spectroscopy systems.
  • Supervise and develop a multidisciplinary team including performance management professional growth promotions and recruiting.
  • Prepare revise and maintain standard operating procedures consistent with US Department of Energy Laboratory Accreditation Program (DOELAP) and other agency guidance for analytical instrument calibration and maintenance ensuring compliance with LLNL policies and procedures.
  • Establish expectations and procedures to perform testing per quality assurance and quality control requirements as specified in LLNL Quality Assurance Program Plans and DOELAP requirements.
  • Present and explain complex technical information and provide advice to management.
  • Conduct complex technical reviews and/or assessments of analytical or calibration processes and make recommendations to management.
  • Develop and implement innovative and creative solutions and plans to enhance existing processes to effectively and efficiently support mission .
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Qlevel security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship. 
  • Bachelors degree in a scientific discipline related field or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Significant experience leading spectroscopy programs and performing radiometric instrument calibration in heavily regulated industries like US DOE National Laboratories.
  • Experience implementing quality management and assurance programs like DOELAP or ISO 17025.
  • Expert knowledge of radiation spectroscopy and radiological monitoring and calibration techniques.
  • Expert verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively present explain and communicate complex technical information to all levels of personnel and management. 
  • Effective organizational and strategic planning skills with detail orientation necessary to handle multiple complex projects and plans.
  • Experience supervising and leading diverse groups of professional disciplines and highly technical staff.
  • Experience providing highlevel customer service and work performance in a production analytical laboratory environment.
  • Significant knowledge of data requirements for external and internal dosimetry as well as in vivo detection of radiation.

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced degree or equivalent experience in chemistry physics health and safety or a related field.
  • Experience working with outside assessors and developing corrective actions in response to assessment findings.
  • Knowledge and experience with standards like the Department of Energy Laboratory Accreditation Program for Personnel Dosimetry or ANSI NPerformance Criteria for Radiobioassay or similar standards.
