Job Description

Position Objective

This is a tenuretrack Faculty Counselor position which will handle a caseload of Running Start and technical college programs. The Faculty Counselor will provide advising/counseling services to Running Start new and continuing CPTC students from New Student Orientation (NSO) through completion. This position will assist students with understanding degree/certificate pathways and requirements and students identified under academic warning satisfactory academic progress and early alert systems. In addition the Faculty Counselor will track and monitor student progress and provide support services to instructional programs that lead to academic success and completion.
This position oversees the entry coordination and program level duties of the CPTC Running Start program. The Faculty Counselor is responsible for creating and maintaining relationships with school districts and high schools. This position coordinates with the corresponding high schools for equivalency and graduation requirements. The Faculty Counselor is responsible for monthly Running Start reporting payment procedures and other administrative duties. This position aligns with the colleges mission by providing educational access and supporting student success through specific retention and completion strategies.

Duties and Tasks (Essential Functions)

Duty: Provide retention and completion services to current students
Tasks include:

  • Counselors will assigned to Running Start students AND specific technical programs and will provide supports through individual advising as well as group advising in the classroom to provide information regarding: education planning registration preparation certificate and/or degree completion graduation requirements career pathways and campus departments and resources.
  • Provide counseling and brief intervention for students experienced issues affecting career and educational achievement and refer to appropriate community resources as necessary.
  • Provide support services to Running Start students to include monitoring data and completing required reporting.
  • Coordinate with Running Start school districts registrars and high school counselors on college and high school equivalencies and graduation requirements.
  • Provide instruction for college success skills such as: stress management career planning goal setting etc. to individual students groups and classrooms as appropriate.
  • Respond to program inquiries for Running Start and technical programs by phone through email virtually and in person
  • Utilize reports and data to inform intervention planning to increase academic success retention and completion.
Duty: Provide support to instructors in their assigned programs
Tasks include:
  • Collaborate with instructors in assigned programs to stay informed regarding changed to curriculum and understanding how changes may affect education plans scope and sequence catalog certificate/degree and completion requirements for students
  • Serve as a point of contact for instructors in assigned programs regarding follow up for students on academic warning satisfactory academic progress those flagged for early alert and those facing other barriers to successful retention and completion.
  • Monitor student academic progress and provide interventions to support students not making academic progress.
  • Demonstrate advising tolls and technology systems to faculty

Duty: Running Start Administrative Duties
Tasks include:
  • Coordinate the intake registration and payment processes for all Running Start students.
  • Hosts regular group Running Start Program Information sessions.
  • Develops and hosts regular social gatherings for Running Start students.
  • Manage Running Start billing requirements in cTcLink.
  • Maintain accurate student files on each scholar.
  • Monitor Running Start data and complete required reporting including RS assessment and outcomes for retention increasing student enrollment and efficiency.
  • Serve as the CPTC Running Start representative on college and statewide committees

Duty: Outreach
Tasks include:
  • Provide workshops seminars and outreach activities as needed to support the college mission.
  • Provide outreach to local high schools college fairs homeschool coops and other appropriate venues about Running Start.

Duty: Engage in professional development and college initiatives.
Tasks include:
  • Maintain best practices in advising/counseling by participating in training networking and other professional development activities.
  • Participate in college committees and meetings as appropriate
  • Develop effective working and consultative relationships with students staff faculty and community resource agencies.
  • Assist with college wide New Student Orientation (NSO) activities.
  • Advise prospective and new students as backup to Outreach and Entry Services Dept.
  • Utilize CPTCs customer service model.
  • Participate in Equity Diversity and Inclusion initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned as pertaining to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology Social Work Educational Psychology or related field.
  • Two years experience advising/counseling adult OR high school populations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience advising/counseling in a higher education setting.
  • Experience working with people from various cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Experience teaching and/or giving presentations/workshops.
  • Professional preparation counseling and student development theory.
  • Fluency in another language.
  • Obtained licensure (ieLMHC MFT MSW etc
