GENERAL STATEMENT OF THE FUNCTION:

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS:
To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skill and/or ability required. Must possess a current police officer certification through the MS Board of Law Enforcement Standards and Training (BLEOST) or other equivalent.
Minimum of five 5 years of supervisory law enforcement experience.
Must not have a criminal history
If prior military must have an honorable discharge
If prior law enforcement must not have been terminated for reasons of criminal activity moral turpitude or other disciplinary grounds.
Must not be legally prohibited from possessing firearms.
Possess a good work history
Free from addictive or excessive use of either alcohol or or use of any illegal substances
Free from any debilitating conditions or any other significant physical limitations or disabilities which would in a physicians opinion impair the applicants ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of a police officer or complete the required minimum training requirements.
Be psychologically capable of exercising appropriate judgment or restraint in performing the essential duties and responsibilities of a police officer.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Bachelors Degree preferred
Law Enforcement Academy training (Certified by MS BLEOST or other state equivalent)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The essential functions include but are not limited to the following:
Act as a member of the department command staff.
Provide commandlevel leadership and oversight for police operations across multiple campuses and/or specialized divisions.
Supervise and mentor midlevel supervisory staff (Lieutenants) ensuring effective management of their assigned areas and shifts.
Maintain operational awareness and readiness including monitoring staffing levels workload and incident response within their division.
Provide situational updates operational reports and recommendations to the Chief or Assistant Chief of Police.
Disseminate pertinent information to subordinates and other law enforcement colleagues.
Coordinate shift and division scheduling with other campus police command staff members to ensure adequate coverage and resource deployment districtwide.
Ensure compliance with departmental policies directives and mission priorities.
Promote and enforce accountability professionalism and ethical conduct within the division.
Evaluate and develop strategies to maintain order and give students visitors and employees an overall sense of security.
Foster positive relationships with campus leadership students staff and community stakeholders within their assigned area.
Continuously study and make appropriate recommendations concerning the security and safety of the College community buildings and grounds.
Respond to major incidents and emergencies as an agency incident commander maintaining incident command until relieved by higher authority.
Develop and implement tactical operational plans for special events emergency preparedness and critical incidents.
Oversee the collection and review of incident reports investigations and compliance documentation within their area.
Gather prepare and report statistical data to comply with state and federal crime reporting requirements including the Clery Act.
Collaborate with other command staff members in the development review and enforcement of departmental policies and procedures.
Provide leadership during internal investigations and performance evaluations for assigned personnel.
Assist in identifying training needs and development opportunities for agency personnel.
Perform police duties in a manner that supports the Police Departments vision mission and core values.
Execute special assignments as directed by the Office of the Chief of Police/Director of Public Safety as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Office of the Chief of Police//Director of Public Safety.
Maintain knowledge of diversityrelated issues legislation and best practices.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Captain is responsible for the direct supervision of midlevel supervisory staff (Lieutenants) and firstline supervisors (Sergeants) assigned to their campuses or division as well as the overall leadership of officers and civilian staff within their area of responsibility. Captains act as the primary operational leaders for their division and serve as the key liaisons between field operations and the Office of the Chief of Police//Director of Public Safety.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical:
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in a law enforcement setting; an office setting; restrain or subdue individuals; walk stand sit or run for prolonged periods of time; occasionally stoop bend kneel crouch reach and twist; occasionally climb and balance; regularly push pull lift and/or carry light to moderate weights; frequently lift and/or move moderate to heavy weights; occasionally lift and/or move heavy weights.
Operate office equipment including use of computer; requires a sense of touch finger dexterity and gripping with hands and fingers; ability to speak and hear to exchange information.
Ability to operate multiple types of motor vehicles and operate and use specialized law enforcement tools and equipment including guns and handcuffs and verbally communicate to exchange information.
Vision:
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Hearing:
Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions near moving mechanical parts in high/precarious places with firearms and explosives and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions fumes or airborne particles toxic or caustic chemicals extreme cold extreme heat and vibrations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and the employee is occasionally required to perform job responsibilities in the outdoors and off site.
