Job Description

Department Overview

This position functions in the Department of Interventional Radiology as an integral member of our teamapproach to patient care. The Interventional Radiology Technologist in collaboration with physicians andnurses strives to provide high quality care to every patient coming through the unit. Daily assignments varydue to the range of procedures that may be completed from central line placements to embolizations andstrokes. The patient population varies from neonates to geriatrics adding another unique layer to the careprovided in the unit. This position rotates between the dual locations of IR which include the SouthWaterfront/CHH2 as well as the 11A unit of the main OHSU Hospital building with call requirements.

The IR Technologist provides direct patient care using medical imaging techniques to help theInterventionalist in diagnosis and/or treatment. Provides assistance with radiographic procedures todemonstrate vascular and nonvascular structures for interpretation and/or therapeutic appropriate patient care and recognizes patient conditions essential for successful completion of theprocedure. Ensures the radiation safety for all patients as well as the other team members involved in theprocedure. Clinical assessments including NIHSS are deferred to RN and privileged staff. NIHSS education isnot required due to assessment deferment and Oregon RT(R) scope of practice.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Assists physician during cases while operating a variety of complex radiologic imaging equipment including fluoroscopy digital subtraction angiography ultrasonography and cone beam CT application within theInterventional Radiologic suite.

  • Prep the patient and prepare supplies under sterile conditions for theprocedure. Scrub in with the physician and assist in performing procedureif needed.

  • Accurately obtains xrays for the exams while being respectful to thepatients abilities and safety issues.

  • Operates automatic injectors and selects the appropriate contrast agentfor the patient and the exam under the direction of the Interventionalist.

  • In collaboration with other staff provides patient care duringexaminations.

  • Responsible for equipment maintenance and use including but not limitedto recognizing troubleshooting reporting and documenting equipmentmalfunctions along with coordinating borrowing equipment from otherdepartments.

  • Cross train to another service area (CCL EP Hybrid OR Endoscopy etc.

  • Work independently oncall with department physicians and nurse.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology program;
  • Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists;
  • A valid Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist license issued by the Oregon Board of Medical imaging;
  • OHSU approved Basic Life Support (BLS) certification;
  • Two years of experience in the operation of radiologic equipment or an equivalent combination of specialized training and experience
  • Student candidates must obtain the RT(R) (ARRT) certification within 6 months of their hire date. Candidates must have a current Oregon Board of Medical Imaging (OBMI) temporary license for student hires and permanent license for registered hires.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years of experience as an IR technologist supporting complex body and neuro interventional radiology procedures. Bachelors degree preferred.
  • Proven IR technologist knowledge skills and abilities.
  • Cardiac Interventional and/or Vascular Interventional certification from ASRT

Additional Details

  • Must be able to deal with competing needs and priorities of internal and external customersincluding making correct judgments ensuring safe conditions for patients families and otherpersonnel.
  • Use of all hospital approved clinical equipment. Significant use of computers copiers multiline phones and fax.
  • Fast paced admit/recovery environment with often competing priorities and quick turnover ofpatients.
  • Must have the ability to change work location based upon procedure volumes and staffing needs.
  • Assignment includes IR procedures 6 procedure labs inpatient day patient outpatient workflows and two work sites (South Waterfront/CHH2 as well as the 11A unit of the Main OHSU Hospital).
  • Ability to arrive at the hospital within 30 minutes of emergency page while on call
