Job Description
The Diesel Mechanic will be responsible for performing skilled maintenance and repair work on all Public Works Department vehicles and equipment as well as overseeing the upkeep of the Town garage. Working under the supervision of the Superintendent and Highway Division Foreman the mechanic will have significant autonomy in decisionmaking regarding vehicle maintenance and repairs.

Skills
- Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing both gasoline and diesel engines
- Skilled in using mechanics tools
- Strong recordkeeping abilities for maintenance documentation

Responsibilities
- Perform skilled repairs and maintenance on gasoline and diesel engines including engine overhauls brake and suspension work electrical system repairs and clutch replacements
- Operate and document a preventive maintenance program keeping detailed records of all work performed
- Repair power equipment and tools such as compressors jackhammers and mowers
- Order and manage parts inventory prepare and maintain repair records
- Assist in developing vehicle specifications
- Operate vehicles for snow removal and sanding during winter plowing and perform emergency highway operations as needed
- Ensure safe practices in vehicle servicing maintain a daily log of activities and update the DPW Computer Maintenance and Management System
Qualifications
- High school diploma with additional technical or vocational training in mechanics
- At least five years of experience in gas and diesel repair work or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing motor vehicles
- CDL B license with airbrake endorsement (Nice to Have)
- Hoisting license (Nice to Have)
