Job Description

Sustainable Energy Engineering: Teaching Stream Faculty (Lecturer)

The School of Sustainable Energy Engineering (SEE) at Simon Fraser University (SFU) Surrey campus located on the unceded traditional territories including the Semiahmoo Katzie kikm (Kwikwetlem) Kwantlen Qayqayt and Tsawwassen Nations is seeking outstanding candidates with proven track records of developing and teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses for a TeachingStream Faculty position (Lecturer).

SEE is hosted at SFUs Surrey campus and focuses on the development of solutions for the harvesting storage transmission and use of energy with careful consideration of economic environmental societal and policy implications. This interdisciplinary school addresses the urgent need for engineers trained in new technologies that can change our world by tackling the causes and impacts of climate change. Celebrating its fifth anniversary in 2024 SEE aims to give students the skills and knowledge needed for them to hit the ground running in emerging cleantech sectors such as renewable power generation clean buildings and zeroemission vehicles.

Lecturers are an integral part of SEE and they contribute to its academic mission and implementation of its strategic plan. The successful candidate will report to the SEE Director and their primary responsibilities are teaching and service.

a) Teaching: The candidate will teach regular undergraduate and graduate courses and will develop new courses as needed. Possible topics based on the candidates expertise are:

  • Core engineering courses (engineering materials mechanics of materials thermodynamics fluid mechanics heat transfer electric circuits and power computational methods design and engineering graphics signals and systems engineering economics engineering statistics)
  • Specialized courses in engineering (life cycle assessment sustainable energy engineering materials for energy systems energy storage data analytics and machine learning.

b) Service

  • Involvement in educational leadership.
  • Involvement in service to the School of Sustainable Energy Engineering the University the academic profession and the community as appropriate.
  • Continuing pedagogical/professional development.


The ideal candidate is expected to possess and demonstrate the following qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a relevant field of engineering
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity diversity and inclusion.
  • Proven excellence in engineering teaching as evidenced by one or more of the following: designing and developing engineering courses from the ground up leading full courses as an instructor supporting learning as a teaching assistant or participating in comprehensive faculty training or teaching development programs.
  • Excellent communication skills and commitment to a teambased working culture.
  • Eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia within one year of assuming the position.

The SEE undergraduate program is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). The successful candidate must either have a Canadian Professional Engineering (. license or be able to secure such qualification within the first year of the initial appointment. Faculty salaries at SFU are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the SFU Faculty Association. A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $98340 $119241 (dependent on experience and inclusive of Market Differential).
