You will be updated with latest job alerts via emailThe Safety Division ensures that the citizens of Arizona and industry employees haverailroad and pipeline systems that are operated and maintained safely. We are seeking an experienced Railroad Inspector to focus on grade crossings.
You will conduct independent and joint inspections of railroad Grade Crossings to ensure compliance with Title 40 A.R.S. ACC Rules and Regulations and the Code of Federal Regulations 49 CFR). This involves inspection and performing certain tests on equipment and writing detailed reports on the results. You may be involved in the design installation and maintenance of Railroad Grade Crossings. You will also provide training to industry people who in some cases are not familiar with 49 CFR part 214 (Railroad Workplace Safety) and are responsible for keeping up with innovation in the maintenance equipment and procedures. The inspection territory covers the entire state of Arizona requiring extensive travel (including overnights) and availability to respond to accidents/incidents during or after regular working hours including emergency incident calls when assigned afterhours phone duty.
Knowledge of Federal and State statutes rules and regulations governing railroad operations and safety with significant recent work experience in the field of Railroad Grade Crossings
Specialized training in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) partsE and F and 229
Knowledge of Quiet Zones and safety devices present at Grade Crossings
Knowledge of the standards contained in the MUTCD
Familiarity with video equipment cameras radar guns and GPS locators; basic computer proficiency particularly with Microsoft Office programs
Ability to develop and carry out a schedule of periodic inspections ascertain the difference between a defect or violation and accurately complete a federal inspection report
Ability to use GIS mapping and spreadsheets to compile and present results of inspections
Skilled in investigating complaints collisions derailments etc.; evaluating data; preparing reports and making recommendations
Ability to inspect plans and records specifically for compliance of applicable parts of the CFR as well as the State of Arizona Administrative Code and the General Code of Operations
Ability to conduct safety meetings and training sessions for railroad employees regarding areas of expertise
Good verbal and written communication skills to communicate with railroad personnel on a technical level and with nonrailroad people to testify at hearings and appear before the Commission at Open Meetings
Heightened situational awareness skills to ensure personal safety while working in the hazardous railroad environment
The Railroad Safety Inspector is expected to meet all requirements of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) OJT program and receive federal certification within approximately 15 months before promotion to a Senior Inspector classification.
All safety personnel must maintain a valid Arizona Drivers License with clean driving record (a state vehicle will be provided).
