Job Description

The Transportation Planning and Management Division (TPM) is responsible for the safe efficient and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the Citys streets supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living working and doing business in New York City. The Divisions responsibilities include planning street design technical analysis signs transit development freight mobility and markings ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants pedestrians and cyclists. The Office of Research Implementation & Safety (RIS) implements road safety street redesigns programs and is also responsible for the management of DOTs crash data conducts largescale safety research projects is lead on many agency action plans and is the key agency group for Vision Zero programs and policy. DOTs Raised Crosswalk program which encompasses a mix of inhouse locations implemented by DOT inhouse resources and capital contracts managed by DDC in partnership with DOT. This is an opportunity to work within RIS a team dedicated to improving road safety and eliminating fatalities and serious injuries throughout New York City.

RISs Safety Projects and Programs team is seeking an ambitious and motivated candidate for its Assistant Director of Capital Development. The chosen candidate will report directly to RIS Director of Safety Projects and Programs and work primarily to manage RIS portfolio of sponsorship capital projects as part of DOTs Vision Zero Initiative in addition to overseeing the Raised Crosswalk program. Working with the program manager the candidate will be responsible for all aspects of the program including but not limited to; location selection methodology site review design construction feasibility review implementation management monitoring/tracking and coordination of capital review. The chosen candidate will also create or supervise the creation of descriptive visual graphics such as renders illustrative plans and sections maps and diagrams for inclusion in public presentations and reports. Duties associated with this role include supervising a team of one or more Urban Designers overseeing the daily management oof capital project development and sponsorship; reviewing and providing recommended additions to proposed capital projects from other agencies and DOT units; representing the unit at high level interagency coordination meetings for capital projects and coordinating outreach and design with consultants and the Department of Design and Construction. For inhouse Street Improvement Projects duties associated with the role will include overseeing the development and integration of urban design concepts into complex Street Improvement Projects and overseeing and researching proposals of new innovative design concepts to the agency on behalf of Safety Projects and Programs. This position will require coordination with all other DOT units as well as knowledge and understanding of other city agencies (DEP DPR MTA DDC EDC) design requirements.

Preferred Skills
Preferred candidate will be proficient in Microsoft Word Power Point Excel AutoCAD GIS and Adobe Creative Suite. At least 2 years of experience managing a traffic safety program which includes NYCDOT standards of traffic calming urban design pedestrianoriented design complete streets and traffic engineering required. Excellent writing editing oral presentation and community outreach skills a must. Valid NYS Drivers License is required.

*Upcoming Associate Urban Designer Examinations #5038 or #5517 will be open for filing 5/1/25 5/21/25. * Note: Less than 2 yrs. City Service New Hire Rate: $84018 2 or more yrs. City service Minimum Incumbent Rate: $96621. This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program agreed to between the City and DC37.

Qualifications :

1. A baccalaureate degree in architecture from an accredited college or university and two 2 years of fulltime experience in planning design research investigations and/or studies related to urban design development programs; or

2. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience which is equivalent to 1 above. However a baccalaureate degree in architecture is required of all candidates. Graduate work
leading to an advanced degree in architecture urban design or city planning maybe substituted for experience on a yearforyear basis.
