OVERVIEW

How I Built This is an interviewbased podcast about innovators entrepreneurs leaders and problemsolverssharing the powerful stories of how they built some of the worlds bestknown brands.

The How I Built This podcast is produced by NPR and distributed by Wondery an Amazonowned podcast publisher. The radio show is distributed by NPR to hundreds of public radio stations across the country.

NPRs How I Built This is looking for a Supervising Editor/Producer to join our highly collaborative and creative team.

Our team currently produces three episodes each week:

  1. an hourlong podcast: an extended interview with host Guy Raz and a prominent founder/entrepreneur
  2. a 45minute long Advice Line podcast featuring Guy and a former guest giving business advice to startup founders
  3. an hourlong radio show: a hybrid of Planet Money and HIBT.

The ideal candidate is already familiar with How I Built This and has extensive experience working in longform audio as well as a solid understanding of how to write frame and edit a complex narrative.

From week to week this Supervising Editor/Producer will manage production for the second weekly show overseeing booking editing and research and background interviews of potential guests.

An academic background in business is not required but a passion for businessand specifically entrepreneurshipis expected.

On this show we are fascinated by what makes founders tick what they were like before their brands became household names and about their fears failures triumphs and insights. The ideal candidate will share our enthusiasm as well as the spirit of optimism and inspiration that How I Built This listeners have come to love and look forward to.

This is a unionrepresented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAGAFTRA.

This is an NPR editorial role covered under the terms of the NPR Ethics Handbook. All editorial staff are bound by this guidance. Editorial staff are defined as staff members who play a role in shaping the journalistic or creative direction of NPRs content including events.

RESPONSIBILITIES

BUSINESS:

  • Represent NPR and facilitate communication with AmazonWondery counterparts on all partnership matters from editorial content to marketing sponsorship and digital /publishing
  • In partnership with HIBTs senior supervising editor ensure that all materials aired meet NPR program standards and practices.

EDITORIAL:

  • Assist host and senior supervising editor in guiding creative direction of HIBTs second weekly episode and the HIBT franchise.
  • Oversee production and edit the second weekly episodes providing feedback to producers throughout the writing editing fact checking and producing processes; assisting with Monday episodes as needed.
  • Work with producers to finalize scripts scoring and sound design.
  • Remain in close coordination with the host and senior supervising editor throughout the production and editing process.
  • Assist with future planning of episodes development of host pitches episodes series ideas and strategic partnerships.
  • Consider a balance of subject matter themes voices and story approaches in show planning.
  • Support the production of assets for social media and other show promotion.

MANAGEMENT:

  • Supervise assigned producers meeting regularly to understand their personal and professional needs and aspirations.
  • Provide clear and consistent feedback to direct reports and mentoring to enable the achievement of professional development goals; make effective recommendations regarding any hiring promotion and discipline for these positions.
  • Manage all deadlines associated with episodes on the production calendar and guide staff as they work toward each deadline.
  • Supervise overall team workflow address pain points and ensure the team meets editorial goals and weekly and annual production goals.
  • Assist senior supervising editor in managing team meetings pitch conversations debriefs and discussions; lead those conversations as assigned.
  • Assist in staff temp and intern hiring as needed.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 8 years experience producing and editing the weekly production of longform audio plus a minimum of 3 years experience managing and advising the teammembers who produce audio programs
  • Strong organizational skills and proven success in creating and overseeing successful workflows.
  • Comfort working in audio engineering producing (Dalet Cool Edit ProTools or similar broadcast digital audio workstations).
  • Strong oral communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to find onboard and develop talent.
  • Commitment to cultivating and promoting diversity equity and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Ability to foster an inclusive and equitable workplace culture.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent in work experience preferred.

WORK LOCATION

  • Hybrid Permitted: This is a hybridpermitted role. Some aspects of this role include duties that are better performed at an NPR facility. The employee will be required to be onsite at theWashington DCoffice at least 10 days a year. The employee must also reside in an NPRsupported location based on the number of onsite days they choose.

JOB TYPE

  • This is a temporary 6month) fulltime position.

COMPENSATION

Hourly Rate: The U.S. based anticipated hourly rate for this opportunity is $62.50 per hour. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum hourly rate NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.

Benefits: NPR offers access to comprehensive benefits for employees and dependents. Regular fulltime employees scheduled to work 30 hours or more per week are eligible to enroll in NPRs benefits options.
