POSITION DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Robert Andrew Stuart Fellow

JOB CATEGORY: NonExempt (Hourly)

STATUS: Part Time 4 days or 28 hours per week 1year with possibility to extend)

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Robert Andrew Stuart Fellowship provides a unique opportunity to develop organizing and facilitation skills within AFSCs Emerging Leaders for Liberation (ELL) program while also making an impact on the lives of young people in Philadelphia. Fellowship duties will be split between AFSCs Philadelphia Engagement work and the ELL program.

This Fellowship is designed as a comprehensive and immersive learning experience. The selected Fellow will be given a unique opportunity to gain handson skills in grassroots youth organizing and youth leadership development. The Fellow will assist with the implementation of AFSCs ELL program. The Fellow will participate in program facilitation and curriculum development and will learn alongside other young adults across the US through the process of developing and building individual and collective social justice initiatives as well as networking and coalition building.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Within AFSCs Emerging Leaders for Liberation (ELL) Program:

  1. Support the Director in planning and implementing ELL efforts.
  2. Develop strategies to incorporate creative cultural and artistic components that center on selfcare creative expression and healing justice in training spaces.
  3. Participate in the program facilitation and curriculum development.
  4. Attend AFSC Youth Network meetings and give regular updates on their work.
  5. Support networking and partnerships with AFSC youth programs Quaker colleges and Quaker meetings.
  6. Participate in advisory committee meetings other ELL network calls and conversations. Help support other administrative fundraising and planning aspects of the ELL.
  7. Submit quarterly reports to supervisor

Within AFSCs Philadelphia Engagement work:

  1. Support AFSCs engagement strategy with Philadelphia youth organizing services and youth organizing.
  2. Represent AFSC at appropriate public events and venues engaging constituencies including youth about the work and activities of AFSC.
  3. Participate in the research and planning of possible youth summit in 2027.
  4. Coordinating with Quaker youth activities in Philadelphia local Friends schools and Quaker colleges.
  5. Additional duties as assigned by AFSCs public engagement director.
  6. Regular attendance and punctuality are required.
  7. Operates safely in all conditions and follows policies and procedures.
  8. Other duties and projects assigned.

SUPERVISORY / MANAGEMENT REQUIREMENTS

No direct supervisory responsibilities.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Education: Bachelors degree in social justice or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience required.
  2. A minimum of one year either as intern volunteer or paid staff with youth organizing programs or youth leadership development required.
  3. Familiarity with and demonstrated interest in community organizing training. and youth programs work as it relates to social justice.
  4. Comfortable with all MS Office programs.
  5. Ability to research and condense information to share with others.
  6. Willingness to meet with and develop relationships with young adults from diverse backgrounds and communities in the US.
  7. Understanding of issues facing young people in the Philadelphia area.
  8. Personal experience with and/or understanding of the impacts of mass incarceration on young people and communities in the Philadelphia area.
  9. Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  10. Demonstrated ability to take initiative working both independently and in team settings.
  11. Demonstrated commitment to Social Justice and Equity.
  12. Experience and comfort working with young adults ages 1625.
  13. Experience and comfort with various artistic media social media and/or healing selfcare techniques and practices preferred.
  14. Ability to work in the evenings and/or weekends and to travel as required.
  15. Ability to work effectively independently and within a team environment.
  16. Experience with standard Microsoft Office and related technology.
  17. Must be capable of working under tight time constraints in a highvolume environment with multiple priorities.
  18. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.
  19. Respect for Quaker values and testimonies. Knowledgeable and supportive of the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including nonviolence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.
  20. Respect for and sensitivity to cultural ethnic racial gender and religious diversity and familiarity with nonviolent approaches to problem solving.
  21. Ability to organize plan ahead and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  22. Demonstrated dedication to the principles of fairness equity and inclusion in regard to issues of race class nationality religion age gender and sexual orientation and disabilities.

COMPENSATION

The AFSC offers a competitive Total Rewards package. This position is nonexempt / hourly Salary Family: Fellows Job Code: Fellowship. Minimum Starting Salary $53000 $29.12 per hour). Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life STD & LTD defined benefit pension plan 403b match plus other benefits including vacation PTO sabbaticals extended leaves holidays participation in unemployment and workers compensation and social security.
