Description of Work
The Geotechnical Engineering Unit collects and analyzes subsurface information and provides geotechnical engineering designs and recommendations for roadways and structures. For more information see the Geotechnical Engineering Unit Overviewand Video.
The Geotechnical Engineering Unit is looking for a Grouting Field Supervisor in our Eastern Regional Office.
In this role you will:
- function as a field supervisor and as an expert in slab jacking deep grouting sub sealing and pipe liner installation. inspect bridge approach slabs pavement slabs slope protections bridge wing walls pipe liners crossline pipes.
- oversee the assembly and disassembly of the grouting equipment; and monitor the conditions of equipment and ensure proper maintenance and repair.
- provide project management by planning for the use of personnel equipment or resources to complete the assigned grouting operations.
- train bridge and county maintenance workers statewide in the various tasks required in the pressure grouting operations.
- field supervise four to eight Division employees.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
- Knowledge of methods used in design and construction of highways culverts and bridges to be able to inspect bridge approach slabs pavement slabs slope protections bridge wing walls and pipe liners.
- Experience leveling slabs filling voids around pipe liners sub sealing and deep grouting with cementitious grout.
- Experience assembling and disassembling grouting or other equipment for set up and cleaning monitoring the conditions of equipment and ensuring proper maintenance and repair.
- Demonstrated ability reading interpreting and explaining construction plans asbuilt plans specifications and testing procedures.
- Experience clearly communicating work to be performed and training less experienced employees such as bridge and county maintenance workers.
Additional Expectations:
Frequent overnight travel may be required of this position.
A valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Drivers License with Tanker (N) endorsement is required for this position. Applicant will be given 60 days to obtain a Class A CDL Permit and 90 days from the date of hire to obtain a Class A CDL Drivers License with Tanker(N)endorsement.
Preemployment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment a release form (ALCDRG01 and a background statement (ALCDRG06 must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.- Considerable knowledge of grouting techniques equipment materials and methods used in highway construction; culverts and bridge design and construction; hydraulics; trigonometry.
- Skill and ability to use specialized instruments such as sensitive movement and pressure measuring devices
- Ability to take notes and prepare reports the use of calculators tablets and computers.
- Ability to clearly communicate technical information to varied audiences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associates degree in an applicable area of engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six years progressive technician experience; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and eight years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
