Job Description

General Purpose

The Seasonal Transportation Planner will assist Technical Services with tasks related to transportation planning including data collection mapping analysis design and asset management. Intern will gain handson experience in municipal transportation planning and project implementation. Intern will also develop practical skills by assisting with data collection mapping analysis design and asset management related to transportation systems and urban planning. Intern will gain proficiency in using tools like ArcGIS AutoCAD and Canva to create maps scaled drawings and presentation materials that support multimodal planning and municipal projects. Intern will learn to organize and interpret transportationrelated data draft reports and communicate findings effectively to various audiences including stakeholders and the public. This position can work up to 40 hours per week. Ideal candidates are enthusiastic about transportation systems urban planning and local government with a strong interest in contributing to communityfocused projects.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assist with data collection and analysis
  • Gather and process multimodal transportation data such as traffic counts pedestrian and bicycle volumes and transit usage.
  • Help prepare maps graphics and presentation materials using Canva ArcGIS AutoCAD and other design tools.
  • Conduct fieldwork to inventory existing transportation infrastructure such as sidewalks crosswalks bike facilities and curb ramps.
  • Support equity and safety assessments by organizing and analyzing relevant datasets.
  • Draft reports memos and outreach materials that communicate planning concepts Public Works projects and other findings to a range of audiences.
  • Assist in preparing for public engagement activities including public meetings events and surveys.
  • Maintain and update GIS datasets used for transportation related projects and the Transportation Plan.
  • Review and organize transportationrelated records plans and historic data.
  • Collaborate with City planning and engineering staff to align the Transportation Plan with other initiatives and ongoing projects
  • Conduct best practice and peer city research related to complete streets Vision Zero and multimodal planning.
  • Create maps and scaled drawings and design plans using AutoCAD and ArcGIS.
  • Collect data in the field using GIS GPS surveying and public records.
  • Complete work independently and with frequent communication to Public Works engineers the planning team and the Senior Transportation Planner
  • Perform work in a Windowsbased computer environment

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements

  • Ability to actively support City diversity equality and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.

  • Associates degree or juniorlevel coursework in Transportation Planning Engineering GIS Urban Planning Natural Resource Planning Geography related field or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with engineering construction management drafting or similar field.
  • Proficiency or coursework in ArcGIS is advantageous but not essential.
  • Proficiency or coursework in AutoCAD is advantageous but not essential.
  • Experience or coursework in the collection of new data using professional mapping grade GPS preferred.
  • Ability to work independently efficiently effectively and cooperatively.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and diplomatically.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to organize work and set priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to record and maintain information for future access.
  • Input access and analyze data using a computer.
  • Ability to provide customer service to the public and City staff.
  • Must be able to handle various projects at the same time work effectively under pressure and keep schedules on track.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population with a strong commitment to equity and inclusion among City staff and the general public.
