About JMU:

Located in the heart of Virginias beautiful Shenandoah Valley the city of Harrisonburg is approximately 120 miles from Washington D.C. and Richmond VA. With a population of just over 53000 Harrisonburg is one of the most diverse communities in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The student body includes approximately 20000 undergraduate and 1900 graduate students with over 1000 fulltime instructional faculty.

General Information:

The position is responsible for supporting the development of diverse middle and high school students interest and potential for working in healthcare fields and professions through implementation of a summer camp curriculum. An ability to model inclusive and nondiscriminatory practices in all activities is required. Through collaboration with the project team health professionals school officials community members and community professionals the position assists youth in learning about healthcare positions. Camp staff are responsible for supervising and guiding camp participants to ensure their safety engagement and enjoyment during camp activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervision: Oversee campers during activities meals and free time to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
Activity Leadership: Plan and lead activities that provide handson engagement with medical professions and with campus resources.
Conflict Resolution: Address behavioral issues and mediate conflicts between campers when necessary.
Safety Management: Enforce program and JMU policy provide first aid when needed and ensure all safety protocols are followed.
Communication: Maintain open communication with campers parents and other staff members.
Mentorship: Act as a positive role model encouraging campers to develop new skills and build confidence.
Logistics: Assist with setting up and cleaning up activities escorting camp participants to and from activities managing camp participant comfort during overnight stays.
Emergency Response: Be prepared to handle emergencies and follow camp procedures to ensure camper safety.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge skills and or abilities required)

* Must have completed at least one year of postsecondary academic experience.
* Experience and knowledge of basic theories of individual and family development.
* Demonstrate previous (volunteer or paid) experience of working with diverse youth populations
* Familiarity with health professions
* Ability to drive a 12passenger van.
* Ability to serve overnights during camp experience

Secondary qualifications (Additional Considerations)

* Positive interpersonal skills with individuals from many levels of authority responsibilities professions and identities.
* Aboveaverage organizational skills and an ability to write well with some knowledge of data management through basic computer applications.
* An ability to follow safety instructions that reduce risks and convey those instructions to youth clearly.
* Pass a background check.
* Additional language skills beyond English are considered positively.
* An ability to follow other duties as requested for project success.
* Prior employment at JMU is highly desired.

Working conditions and physical requirements:

Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time; to participate in physical activities that may require lifting squatting agility for quick movements and lifting boxes; to utilize office and medical equipment.

Conditions of Employment:

Students must be degreeseeking students enrolled on at least a halftime basis 6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).

Students must have a 2.0 or better cumulative GPA.
