SU25 TCUP Research Internship Program

Duty Schedule:

Monday Friday; 8:00 am 5:00 pm 10week stipend.

Summary/Objective of Position:

MS Biology graduate students summer research will be as assigned by their Mentor (Hakim Skaltsas Makeyev Robinson) continuing from Spring Semester. They will enroll in the BIO 698 Graduate Research course in the summer. The MS Biology grant 161 will pay for these students.

Undergraduate STEM Students will study various types of biology biomedical and environmental science projects at surrounding locations. These students may be investigating their interest in the MS Biology program and will be supported as potential Honors Scholars by the MS Biology grant 161. All students must enroll in the six 6 credit BIO 485 Undergraduate Research course for the 10week summer session (May 27 August 1 taught by Dr. Don Robinson. Research paper preparation and presentation will be taught in addition to field research methods by their mentor. After being interviewed selected students will choose a research project to be directed by a professional scientist mentor. Students must be approved by Dr. Robinson after an interview.

The following are research positions for undergraduates. Graduates work in their mentor labs continuing from the Spring internship research work.

  • At Navajo Nation Fish and Wildlife:
    • Exploration into various cultural challenges and opportunities experienced by the Navajo community related to wildlife research and management;
    • Document current ecological conditions vegetation wildlife presence and habitat use in preparation for upcoming forest improvement activities (mastication and hand thinning);
    • Analyze wildlife behavior using camera traps. It explores how external factors such as weather time of day and human disturbance influence wildlife activity. Possible locations include along Petrified Forest National Park boundary lines wildlife guzzlers or in selected habitat areas.
    • Assess wildlife presence and activity in habitats burned by wildfire compared to adjacent unburned areas. Understanding wildlife response shortly after a fire can help guide future habitat management and conservation strategies.
    • Investigate traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) related specifically to deer migratory paths and traditional hunting practices in Tsaile AZ. It aims to document local indigenous knowledge to inform and enhance contemporary wildlife management of the deer population.
  • At WIL research label at Din College:
    • Water sampling in San Juan River and Reservation Wells for contaminants and for river macroinvertebrates and their genetic analysis.
  • At Canyon De Chelly National Park:
    • Biology sampling and analysis of raptors owls bears and invasive plants.

  • Students should be entering STEM majors as juniors and seniors at Din College.
  • Some sophomores may be eligible.

Physical Requirements Work Environment & Travel:

  • Students should be physically fit to work in lab and field environments all day and all week for 10 weeks.
