Main Duties
Dr Holly Birkett runs an ongoing programme of work under the umbrella of the Equal Parenting Project which uses extensive primary research and engagement to deliver research informed change beyond academia helping to break down barriers to parents sharing care in order to promote gender equality in the workplace.
Holly has lead the EPP for the past 8 years with activity encompassing quantitative longitudinal research qualitative research extensive engagement and impact work directly with government departments and companies and media work.
As one of the initiatives of the EPP over the next year Holly is planning to put together a large funding bid exploring the impact of COVID working patterns on fathers attitudes towards and time spent engaging in childcare throughout the pandemic and since. The student interns would help support the initial development of this bid.
Working on a funding bid is a great way to learn about the research process as it involves designing a entire research project with a literature review research questions research design proposed outputs and engagement etc.
Students will have the opportunity to work across the whole bid or focus on areas they are more interested in such as literature review of engagement plans or helping set up an advisory board and there will be flexibility to alter this a the project develops and the student uncovers more about their strengths and interests
Person Specification
Support provided for the internship
Running a large and varied programme of research and engagement means I can offer flexibility in a placement to give students some involvement in codesigning their project at the start of the example if a student is more interested in how to write literature reviews to help them prepare for their dissertations we can give you more support and experience in this area but ifa student is more interested in how research is used in engagement activities with companies then there are opportunities to add more of this.
My approach is see it (watch me do it or explain it) do it collaboratively (have a go at doing it with me) have a go on your own with support and feedback. We will have regularly check in meetingsand reflexive chats about how the project is going and anything we might change.
Through this project you will learn and practice skills around analysing literature writing for an academic and non academic audience mixed research methods how funding in universities works how a research project is planned and much more. You will also have access to other opportunities through the Work Inclusivity Research Centre which I also lead.
