The City of Urbandale is seeking an individual for the Summer 2025 Senior Recreation Center Intern position. Urbandale is a progressive and growing community of over 45000 people. Urbandale is a suburb of Des Moines located on the northwest side and is nestled between West Des Moines Clive and Johnston.
Our Senior Recreation Center provides a safe welcoming and energizing environment where our communitys adults 55 and over can enhance their quality of life by engaging in a healthy and active lifestyle. Urbandale is committed to its senior citizens and our Senior Recreation Center is a great example of how our community makes good on that commitment!With over 40000 in attendance each year the programs and services offered by the Urbandale Senior Recreation Center that help keep life interesting enriching and fun are certainly no secret.
We believe the internship should be a wellrounded comprehensive experience that gives the student an opportunity to learn about all aspects of the recreation/leisure services and parks departments. Hours for this internship can flexible based on the students internship needs. The Senior Recreation Center Intern can work parttime hours or up to 40 hours per week over the summer.This internship will run from midMay through midAugust 2025.Routine Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a special project focusing on technology education for seniors from beginning to end using all elements of program planning to successfully complete the project.
- Assist as needed in the office developing phone etiquette filing record keeping and answering customer inquiries.
- Assist with public relations and promotions of department programs and activities including press releases coordinating media coverage developing customer friendly operating procedures designing program fliers and elements of program marketing and assisting with developing the seasonal program guide.
- Create and implement three new programs primarily for seniors likely with a focus on technology education and fluency.
- Attend board meetings staff meetings and council meetings. Review budget procedures contract management and other administrative duties.
- Assist with recreation programs (development coordination scheduling supervision and customer satisfaction). Programming includes education sports & recreation day trips social cards & games gardening technology fitness and more. Some crossover to youth and adult activities will also be available.
Typical Qualifications
- This internship is open to students pursuing a degree in recreation leisure services sports management or a related field.
- Must be 21 years of age and have valid Drivers License.
