PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Transportation Manager of Operations assumes the duties and responsibilities related to managing supervising and training personnel as well as dispatching routing and scheduling buses. Also serves as a contact person between the Human Resources Department and the Transportation Department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification Requirements

  • Bachelors degree preferred
  • Texas Association for Pupil Transportation Certification preferred
  • Possess current Texas Commercial Drivers License (Class B)
  • Current Texas School Bus Driver Certification and/or enrolled in next available course offered by Region 20 Service Center

Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of computer skills word processing spreadsheets etc.
  • Ability to supervise and work with Transportation personnel
  • Ability to be trained in the Transportation Computer Routing System (Transfinder)

Experience

  • Minimum of five 5 years of experience in school transportation preferred
  • Experience as a certified bus driver
  • Experience in the field of fleet management

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

(The following statements describe the general purpose and responsibilities assigned and should not be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities skills efforts or working conditions that may be assigned or skills that may be required.

  • Assists in scheduling buses and drivers on both regular and special education routes
  • Assumes responsibility to review timecards and leave forms for Payroll and Human Resources
  • Oversees the assigning and scheduling of buses for extracurricular trips
  • Compiles weekly student counts for all bus routes
  • Assists in handling calls from parents and school administrators that have concerns with transportation
  • Assumes the responsibilities of coordinating all bus driver and/or student driver problems with the Director of Transportation
  • Makes regular inspections of buses for cleanliness and possible vandalism
  • Assists in formulation of updating and revising routes proposed to improve transportation service
  • Responds to emergency calls from bus drivers on extracurricular trips after regular duty hours
  • Assists the Director of Transportation with state and federal transportation reports
  • Assures that drivers have current route descriptions and student emergency cards for each passenger on the bus
  • Obtains supervisory certification for the Federal DITDrug and Alcohol Program
  • Assists in coordinating the Transportation Department video library bus driver training program
  • Drive a school bus with or without students on board
  • Maintains a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervision and evaluation of Transportation personnel

Equipment Used:

  • Office equipment personal computer printer calculator multiline telephone software programs and peripherals copier fax and other equipment applicable to position.
  • Communication equipment radio communication equipment cellular telephone
  • Video monitoring equipment

  • Maintain emotional control under stress
  • Work with frequent interruptions

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent: Sitting standing walking climbing stairs and/or ramps balancing stooping kneeling crouching crawling pulling pushing reaching repetitive hand motions hearing speaking clearly visual acuity distinguishing colors driving traveling.
  • Occasional: Lifting moderate 1544 pounds; carrying moderate 1544 pounds

Environmental Factors:

  • Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold) humidity extremes noise low or intense illumination vibration
  • Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases bacteria insects mold fungi etc. work outside work around moving objects or vehicles work on uneven surfaces work alone work prolonged or irregular hours.
