Background to the internship

Birmingham Business School (BBS) is offering paid research internships for Business School undergraduates interested in gaining experience as research assistants on projects being undertaken by BBS academics. There are 8 research projects available to apply to all of which are listed on Worklink (please visit each individual advert is see the full details of the project). You can apply to more than one if you are interested in multiple projects.

Research interns will work closely with the relevant academic(s) and will be supported to undertake a range of research tasks. Depending on the skillset of the selected students and the needs of the projects such tasks may include assisting with literature searches and literature reviews; assisting with the collection and/or analysis of primary research data; analysing data from existing data sets creating and maintaining one resources; summary project results etc.

If specific training is required for the internship this will be provided and delivered by the lead academic.

There will be additional skills/experience requirements for some specific opportunities are particularly suited to students who feel they might wish to pursue a career in academic research or are curious about academic research BBS UG students (including finalists) can apply for these are however particularly keen to receive applications from students from backgrounds underrepresented in academia.

Background to the Academic Researcher providing the project

Dr. Gu Pang (Polly) is an Associate Professor specializing in Procurement and Operations Management. She has been part of the university since 2018 and leads the Procurement and Operations Management Group. Polly studied at Nottingham University and Lancaster University earning degrees in Operations Management and Management Science.

Angela Marqui is an Associate Professor at Birmingham Business School and the Director of Undergraduate Programmes. She has a PhD in Production Engineering and has taught at universities in Brazil and the UK for over 20 years. Angelas research focuses on operations management business education and logistics. She loves teaching and is dedicated to making learning engaging and practical for her students. Whether youre interested in how businesses operate or want to learn more about logistics Angela is here to help you succeed.

Main Duties

1. Literature Review: A comprehensive review of existing research on datadriven decisionmaking customercentric strategies and sustainable practices will be conducted. This will provide a theoretical foundation for understanding the potential interactions between these objectives.

2. Case Studies: Indepth case studies of companies that have successfully integrated at least two of these objectives will be analysed to gather insights on the practical challenges and benefits of pursuing these goals simultaneously.

3. Analysis and Reporting: The collected data will be analysed to identify patterns and correlations. The findings will be compiled into a publication target at a conference highlighting best practices and potential pitfalls for companies aiming to achieve these objectives while remaining profitable and productive.

This research project will contribute to the field of operations management offering practical recommendations for companies seeking to balance datadriven customercentric and sustainable practices with profitability and productivity.

Person Specification

Support for the internship

As a mentor I prioritize creating an inclusive and supportive environment for my student interns. At the start of the internship I provide training in three core research skills:

a) database search: guidance on how to navigate relevant databases search for and identify academic papers articles and other sources.

b) critical analysis: a workshop exploring a critical analysis framework and its application in this project and beyond including examples and discussions.

c) use of reference manager tool: guidance on how to use reference managers effectively.

These skills are transferable to the students academic life helping them in their future coursework and dissertations. One of the Principal Investigators (PI) has 20 years of experience supervising smallscale research projects with students at all levels. She have particularly enjoyed mentoring undergraduate students in similar projects in the past.
