Job Description

The APP will provide direct patient care to infants children and young adults in the Pediatric Pulmonology division. This will include conducting comprehensive health history and physical assessments establishing medical diagnoses ordering and evaluating diagnostic studies and developing treatment plans. The major disease focus will be on outpatient care for asthma. The APP will also have opportunities to provide inpatient and telehealth consultations regarding chronic asthma care and to lead quality improvement initiatives in asthma care. The APP will work in collaboration with attending physicians while exercising autonomy within their scope of practice as outlined by applicable state law regulations institutional policies and practice agreements to provide excellent clinical care for patients in the pediatric pulmonology ambulatory clinic.

Duties to include:

  • Function independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan deliver and evaluate healthcare for infants children and young adults seen within the pediatric pulmonology division.
  • Perform medical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures prescribe dispense or deliver medications used in pediatric pulmonology within their scope of practice as described in state and federal laws including but not limited to the following:
    • History specific for pulmonology
    • Pulmonary function tests
    • Diagnostic imaging
    • Antiasthma medications
    • Education (disease medications monitoring action plan)
    • Management of chronic or recurrent pulmonary conditions
  • Initiate and coordinate referrals to other health care team members or agencies.
  • Collaborate/consult in the optimization of care delivery through coordination and transitions of care as a part of a team.
  • Accurately and appropriately complete documentation of patient care in the electronic medical record (EMR) and other records for compliance billing and other regulatory standards.
  • Provide health education to patients and families; participate in the development utilization and evaluation of resources to meet patient/family educational needs.
  • Provide education and serve as a resource for nursing staff in area of clinical expertise and to external agencies community and other health professionals.
  • Follow prescribed practices in communicating and elevating any quality and patient safety concerns.
  • Participate in development and implementation of divisional and departmental quality assessment/improvement/research programs and processes.
  • Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies certifying body renewals seeking educational offerings when available and participates in the professional development of others which may include APP students Residents and Medical Students. Acts as a preceptor/mentor for those new in the department.
  • Contribute toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals.
  • Assure clinical competency and expertise in area of specialization.
  • Ability to function as an independent practitioner within guidelines of the collaborative practice agreement Iowa Board of Nursing or Iowa Board of Physician Assistants and UI Health standards.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP):

  • A Masters degree is required. A Masters degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is preferred. If Masters degree is in a related field a Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required.
  • A current RN license from the State of Iowa is required
  • Current certification as a pediatric nurse practitioner (CPNPAC or CPNPPC) and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required.

Experience Requirements

  • National certification as PNP PNPAC PNPPC or PA (national exam) is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Demonstrated experience in pediatrics or knowledge of pediatric patient care is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a group setting.
  • Demonstrated clinical experience in the practice of pediatrics is required.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience in Pediatric Pulmonary diseases.
  • Experience working in an outpatient setting and as a member of an interdisciplinary health care team.
