Job Description
Job Summary:
The Chemist is responsible for conducting sample extractions dilutions sample analysis and data analysis on cannabis samples. The Chemist troubleshoots analytical and data issues. Additionally the individual must be able to represent Smithers to clients both over the phone and in person and transmit the professional image of the organization. The Chemist assists in developing new methodologies in support of and assigned by laboratory management. Other duties include performing routine maintenance of laboratory equipment instrument calibration and mentoring and training of junior departmental staff.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts sample extraction dilution and analysis using state of the art analytical instrumentation including HPLC ICPMS GCMS/MS LCMS/MS and GCMS
- Performs and confirms calculations for quality control samples
- Performs data handling and calculation of results
- Ensures accuracy of data entered into LIMS
- Trains other staff members
- Assist with development and validation of new testing methodologies
- Orders chemicals and supplies for the department
- Maintains inventory of needed supplies
- Additional duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Education:
- A Bachelors degree in the chemical environmental physical or biological sciences or engineering.
Experience:
- At least 3 years of experience in analytical chemistry preferably in a highly regulated industry (e.g. cannabis pharmaceuticals food biotechnology etc.
- Experience operating a full spectrum of analytical instrumentation such as HPLC ICPMS GCMS/MS LCMS/MS and GCMS is preferred
- Previous experience in a cannabis testing lab and/or in a supervisory capacity is a plus
Skills:
- Good technical writing skills in analytical chemistry
- Excellent problemsolving abilities and analytical thinking
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal) for regulatory and internal reporting
- Proficiency with data management systems documentation and reporting tools
- Ability to work at a fast pace prioritize work assignments and handle stress
Additional Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must be able to pass a background check
- Occasional long hours may be required during audits inspections or deadlines
- Ability to travel as needed
Chemical Safety:
- Must be able to comprehend the potential hazards of the chemicals in use and adhere to the proper safety techniques as dictated by the Safety Manual and/or Management.
Laboratory Safety:
- Must be able to wear gloves lab coat eye protection sleeves hearing protection pesticide suit plastic booties dust masks a respirator and a face mask.
- Must be able to understand and follow laboratory safety standards.
