Assists program staff in the coordination and implementation of programs designed to assist immigrant families; performs field work and outreach functions; serves as liaison between immigrant clients professional staff schools and other agencies; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility to perform a variety of tasks in providing clerical informational and technical assistance to program staff in the coordination and implementation of programs designed to assist immigrant families in the acculturation and social integration process.
The Immigrant Services Assistant I class differs from the Immigrant Services Assistant II class in that the Immigrant Services Assistant I class performs a variety of tasks in providing clerical informational and technical assistance to program staff in the coordination and implementation of programs designed to assist immigrant families in the acculturation and social integration process; whereas the Immigrant Services Assistant II class is responsible for performing subprofessional technical and substantive clerical work in assisting immigrants and their families in the acculturation and social integration process.

Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of work experience in providing supportive services to professional staff in programs dealing with social services health education or a related area which shall have demonstrated the ability to establish and maintain rapport with individuals and groups; understand and explain program related material; communicate effectively with individuals and groups in eliciting and relating pertinent information; and prepare a variety of reports.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle drivers license (equivalent to State of Hawaii Type 3.
Knowledge of: basic cultural and social problems common to immigrant groups; interviewing techniques; public relations; the functions of County State and Federal agencies; community resources and their utilization; basic human needs; basic skills in reading writing and speaking; use of standard office machines and equipment including personal computers peripheral equipment and software applications.
Ability to: communicate effectively with clientele and staff; perform a variety of clerical tasks; establish and maintain rapport with clients and representatives of other public and private agencies; document information and prepare simple reports; work independently; follow oral and written instructions; use a personal computer.

The above examination is being given on an opencompetitive basis to establish an eligible list which shall be effective for not more than one year unless extended by the Director of Personnel Services.

PreEmployment/PostOffer Drug Screening Test: All applicants who will enter a safety sensitive position or certain designated categories that the Personnel Services Director has established or who are required by law to be drug tested must pass a preemployment/postoffer drug screening test as a condition of employment. There is no retesting or reevaluation process. Cost for the drug screening test shall be borne by the County of Maui.
