Job Description

Description

The Respite Care Worker (RCW) provides support guidance and supervision to the Kaitlyns Cottage participants (individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities) and is responsible for the personal care food preparation and housekeeping of the cottage.

  • Provides exceptional assistance to all participants as described in their notebooks and as directed by their caregivers and Program Manager. Is able to adequately assist all participants with all aspects of their care regardless of their ability level or individual special needs (physical intellectual or psychological).
  • Appropriately communicates and interacts with participants. Actively engages participants in a wide variety of activities encouraging as much independence as possible. Offers appropriate activity choices and facilitates involvement of participants who are difficult to engage as well as those who are eagerly willing to participate. Adapts and transitions through activities smoothly based on participant interest and level of enjoyment of the activity.
  • Ensures health and safety of all participants by following safety protocols mealtime guidelines proper lifting techniques medication administration protocol and frequent or continuous monitoring and supervision of all participants on the census. Uses good judgment and thinks proactively to prevent dangerous situations.
  • Prepares meals and eats meals with participants in a family style setting. Engages the participants in meal preparation conversation/interaction during the meal and cleanup following the meal according to each individuals ability and/or interest level.
  • At beginning of shift prepares by planning activities or gathering supplies. Following activity puts supplies back in the appropriate location. Whenever able and appropriate includes the participant with getting supplies out and putting away.
  • Consistently documents activities and summary of respite session in participant charts. Uses good judgment in regards to what information is important and appropriate to share with caregivers and Program Manager.
  • Cleans cottage thoroughly and/or as needed during shift. Demonstrates initiative and responsibility to clean all areas where participants and staff have used during the shift. Uses down time efficiently and take initiative to inspect and clean areas of the building that need deep cleaning. Ensures that paper products and/or supplies are stocked in bathrooms kitchen and other areas as needed. Completes laundry as needed (ie: bedding after overnight stays bath and dish towels participant clothing when staying for multiple days). Always leaves cottage presentable for tours and visitors. Refers to task checklist when uncertain of what needs to be completed.
  • May be required to transport participants in the Kaitlyns Cottage bus if an approved driver. Follows transportation and community activity policies and represents Kaitlyns Cottage well in the community.
  • Performs work in a professional manner and handles responsibility well. Demonstrates confidence and the ability to think rationally and remain calm during stressful situations. Works well alone is extremely trustworthy and requires little direction from the Program Manager. Always represents Kaitlyns Cottage well to caregivers and other visitors.
  • Attends all mandatory KC meetings and trainings as required and keeps certifications current in BLS firstaid and other areas as determined and required by Program Manager.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by Program Manager.


Requirements
  • H.S. diploma or General Education Development Certificate (GED).
  • Preference given to associates or bachelors degree in a related field and to previous work experience with individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities.
  • Must possess basic writing and computer skills.
  • Successful employment is determined by candidate successfully passing a FBI criminal record check state police criminal record check department of social services record check successfully passing the prehire controlled substance test and prehire physical.
