Primary Purpose of Position:

The SouthportSite Manager directs a staff of specialized technical professionals engaged in promoting the understanding of North Carolina History through collection preservation exhibition and educational activities at a regional branch of the North Carolina History Museums. The Museum Site Manager is responsible for the administration of daytoday operations including planning development marketing and directing all aspects of the museum. In addition the Museum Site Manager sets standards and best practices ensuring that established national and international museum standards and best practices are followed and adhered to.


Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • With the Director of Regional History Museums this role provides overall direction and guidance for the focus and development of museum resources in realization of the division and museum mission.
  • Establish social presence to promote awareness of the museums and monitor the overall image of the museum in local regional and state communities.
  • Provide the Director of Regional History Museums with historical and logistical information to facilitate optimal operation of the regional museum.
  • Prepare track and coordinate operating capital and grant budgets and project future needs considering established strategic goals.
  • Set resource and maintenance repair priorities; approves and may process invoices for payment.
  • Develop work plans assign and monitor tasks evaluate work and conduct performance reviews.
  • Serve in the community as a representative of the museum for many outside activities and events.
  • Engage with community organizations and local state and national governmental and educational organizations to promote the museum and create new programs and/or exhibits.
  • Must communicate effectively in public through writing and/or public speaking.


Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid NC drivers license within 90 days of employment to drive a state vehicle.
  • Must be able to work Monday through Friday 8am 5pm and occasional nights and weekends.

The Mission of the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southportis to collect preserve and interpret material culture pertinent to the maritime history of the Lower Cape Fear region. To support the museum visit our Friends of the NC Maritime Museum at Southport.

TheDivision of State HistoryMuseums collects and preserves artifacts and other historical materials relating to the history and heritage of North Carolina in a local regional national and international context to assist people in understanding how the past influences the present. The Division interprets the states history through exhibitions educational programs and publications available to the visitor onsite or through distancelearning technologies. The museum division includes seven regional museums at Elizabeth City Fayetteville Beaufort Cape Hatteras Southport Kenly and Old Fort.
