Job Description

Introduction

Purpose

The Investigator/Adjuster evaluates all claims filed againstthe City for bodily injury and/or property damage arising from a generalliability or vehicular accident providing recommendations and concluding eachby settlement or denial.

Essential Functions

Analysis and Administration

  • Process a high volume of claims filed against the City from initial contact with the claimant to settlement or denial.
  • Draft correspondence write denial letters to claimants and their attorneys and draft recommendation letters to the Common Council.
  • Review medical reports establish the value of injury claims and negotiate settlements.
  • Analyze claims data and investigative reports from City departments.
  • Serve as a resource to assist city departments with billing for damages.
  • Refer physical inspection of property damage to an approved vendor when field inspection is necessary and review property damage estimates.
  • Oversee the work of one clerical staff member by assigning duties outlining methods directing work in progress monitoring progress of assigned work and reviewing completed work.

Investigation and Claimant Communication

  • Serve as the first point of contact by responding to questions and complaints from claimants.
  • Contact claimants or their attorneys witnesses and city personnel as the investigation requires.
  • Inspect property damage and accident sites take photos and canvass for witnesses.
  • Answer claim status requests and other general inquiries.

Conditions of Employment

Required to file a statement of economic interests per theMilwaukee Code of Ordinances Chapter 303Code of Ethics.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Bachelors Degree in business accounting criminal justice riskmanagement or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
  2. One year of fulltime adjusting experience in property causality and/or commercial line insurance in a professional setting.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may beconsidered.

Knowledge Skills Abilities & Other Characteristics

Technical

  • Knowledge of insurance adjustment practices and principles for claims adjusting.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws statutes regulations ordinances and case law.
  • Knowledge of investigative methods procedures policies and the laws governing and prescribing the powers and authorities of general liability claims under s. 893.80 Wis. Stats..
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of general liability investigations and the applicable statute of limitations.
  • Ability to negotiate settlements.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records including investigative reports activity logs and settlement requests.
  • Ability to obtain claimant statements and respond to correspondence and telephone inquiries.
  • Ability to gather evidence from a variety of sources; organize verify and analyze the evidence; and draw conclusions.
  • Ability to read and interpret workrelated documents including insurance policies police reports medical treatment records and bills.
  • Ability to use reasoning to gather information; apply tests of law rules and regulations; and make independent determinations of their applicability.
  • Ability to utilize computer software including databases and Microsoft Office products such as Word Excel and Outlook.

  • Ability to plan and coordinate work of others to assist with the claims process.
  • Ability to appropriately assign duties outline methods direct work in progress monitor progress of assigned work check or inspect completed work.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding personnel matters.
  • Ability to foster an environment of inclusion wherein all employees are treated respectfully are valued for their strengths and feel that they can safely express themselves.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • Written communication skills to develop business correspondence document investigations and create reports.

  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with coworkers and residents whose backgrounds may differ from ones own.
  • Ability to actively listen to and understand information presented by others.
  • Ability to persuade others and negotiate agreements within given parameters.

  • Ability to effectively use independent judgment.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure and handle difficult interactions with claimants.
  • Ability to gather data from multiple sources and implement the appropriate course of action.
  • Ability to complete a high volume of claims within strict deadlines.
  • Ability to plan and organize work adjust to changing priorities and achieve objectives within deadlines.
  • Integrity honesty and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to serve as an effective steward of citywide resources.

Current Salary

The current salary range (Pay Range 2IX) is$68244$86854annuallyand the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residentsis$70292$89460annually.Appointment above the minimum ispossible based upon level of experience and other qualifications and is subjectto approval.

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consistof one or more of the following: an evaluation of education experience and/orresponses to supplemental questions; a written or performance test astructured interview or other assessment methods.
