Job Description:
The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) has an exciting opportunity for a selfstarting detailoriented individual to work as a Highway Traffic Data Collector. Youll have the unique opportunity to work independently and autonomously as you travel Southeast Nebraska (state vehicle provided) performing skilled work in surveying vehicular and pedestrian traffic movement. Well train you to use counting classifying and monitoring equipment to collect traffic data integral to highway planning and/or traffic engineering studies.

Pay rate for this position is $16.277/hr.
JOB DUTIES:
- This position annually collects 1/3 of the portable count data collected across the state.
- Distribute traffic counters set operating parameters and measure/collect and/or retrieve via automated equipment.
- Examine field data for accuracy and validity prepare code and enter field data for processing and prepare/maintain necessary records and reports.
- Create a schedule in advance for the data collection period. Determine dates and specific locations for collections. Make reservations for overnight stays as needed.
- Collect traffic data from selected sites across the state using portable data collection equipment.
- Read and determine the usability of data collected and whether or not to reset/redo.
- Download data to PC quality check data before formatting into a report and upload documents to retention system.
- May conduct special studies (e.g. radar rest area pedestrian high crash location etc. on an infrequent basis.
- Operate stateowned vehicle and determine the most economical route to the identified location and the safest place to park on location so as not to interfere with other drivers view and ensure your own safety.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements/ Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:High school education or equivalent plus one year of satisfactory work experience. Must possess a valid Nebraska drivers license.
Preferred Qualifications:Good driving record.
Other: Extensive statewide overnight travel is required. Work schedule may involve tenhour or other extended workdays. Regular and reliable attendance is required.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
Will provide training! Upon completion of training you will possess knowledge of the operation and maintenance of traffic counters and methods used in field studies of traffic classification.
Knowledge of:
- Use/operation and maintenance/repair of equipment used in traffic data collection.
- Methods used in field studies such as radar speed studies school crossing studies parking studies and manual counting of vehicle volume.
- Vehicle types.
- Software applications used in data collection.
- Field data preparation for computer processing.
Skill in:
- Selection of appropriate sites for the installation of traffic counters.
- Installing traffic counters.
- Operating a motor vehicle in the performance of speed test runs on curves and other segments of highway.
Ability to:
- Make efficient use of time in scheduling/performing data collection.
- Collect quality check organize and report statistical information.
