The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Northern Region Design and Engineering Services is looking for a Land Surveyor Manager 1 to help us

Keep Alaska Moving!



What you will be doing:

In this role you will have the opportunity to oversee the Right of Way (ROW) Engineering staff and collaborate with various sections including Preliminary Design Design Construction and Maintenance to provide essential surveying mapping and land title services for the Northern Region. Youll manage multiple ROW projects and ensure that regional surveying standards are met while also administering consultant contracts.


Your responsibilities will include scheduling engaging surveying activities aligning staff levels with the workload conducting field inspections and analyzing survey requirements. Youll lead a dynamic team prepare cost estimates ensure compliance with laws and maintain open communication with survey crews as you guide the preparation of crucial survey documentation.


Additionally youll have the chance to research records respond to inquiries develop mapping standards evaluate and support your staff facilitate training and ensure that historical records and databases are up to date. The working environment you can expect:

This position is centrally located in Fairbanks at the DOT&PF complex 2301 Peger Road) which houses all of Northern Regions design construction maintenance and support staff between multiple buildings within walking distance along Peger Road. As a land survey manager you can expect a collaborative working environment where teamwork and communication are essential. You will be responsible for assigning tasks to staff managing projects and overseeing survey operations to ensure efficiency and productivity. The work will often involve both office settings for data analysis and fieldwork for onsite surveys. You will engage in regular interactions with contractor surveyors engineers and other stakeholders while also addressing any issues that arise. Additionally the environment may require adaptability to varying schedules and project demands as well as a focus on maintaining safety and compliance with legal standards.


Who we are looking for:
We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

  • Project Management:Knowledge of the principles methods or tools for developing scheduling coordinating and managing projects and resources including monitoring and inspecting costs work and contractor performance.

  • Supervision:Plans distributes and monitors work assignments; evaluates work performance and provides feedback to others; ensures staff are utilized and developed appropriately.

  • Decision Making:Makes sound wellinformed and objective decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions which is essential when assessing project requirements and coordinating multiple activities.

  • Communication Skills:Expresses information effectively to individuals or groups both orally and in writing ensuring clear instructions and expectations are communicated within various teams and stakeholders.

  • Surveying:Knowledge of the concepts principles theories and methods used in the measurement or determination of land boundaries and features which is a core component of the roles responsibilities.

Special Note:A valid drivers license is required for this position.

Registration as a Professional Land Surveyor AND two years experience as a registered Land Surveyor.

Special Note:Registration as a Professional Land Surveyor in Alaska is required for appointment to this job class. Applicants registered in another state may apply but appointment is conditional upon receiving Alaskan registration as a Professional Land Surveyor. Registration may be allowed without examination to applicants holding registration in another state with similar requirements.
