Brief Description of Duties

The Associate Professor and Department Chair of the Department of Architecture and Urban Sustainability at the University of the District of Columbias College of Agriculture Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences plays a pivotal role in academic leadership and administration. They are responsible for overseeing the departments strategic direction curriculum development and faculty management. The incumbent contributes to teaching and research in architecture and urban sustainability guiding students and advancing knowledge in sustainable design urban planning and environmental stewardship. The role integrates academic excellence with practical applications preparing students to address contemporary urban challenges through innovative and sustainable solutions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teach valueinclusive design studios in the undergraduate (B.S. in Architecture) program as well as lecture and seminar courses in their area of expertise for the undergraduate and NAAB accredited graduate (M. Arch. program in Architecture and Community Planning or other relevant courses as assigned.
  2. Conduct research and scholarly activities in an area of Architecture and Community Planning and collaborate with CAUSES academic land grant and university experts. Applicants should have established research interests and/or a record of publication teaching and service in any of the following areas but not limited to: design innovation urban sustainability sustainable architecture building technology digital fabrication urban planning development and community design and landscape architecture and naturebased built environment.
  3. Engage students in landgrant and communitycentered activities to prepare them for entrylevel positions in architecture and graduate level scholarship.
  4. Work with students to plan and mentor research and servicelearning experiences that stress the experiential active learning and development of critical skills which are the focus of the Architecture and Community Planning.
  5. Advise students and participate in department and university service.
  6. Develop and maintain an awareness of urban planning urban sustainability and urban architectural issues in communities in the District of Columbia.
  7. Utilize a variety of assessment techniques to ensure achievement of student learning outcomes. Demonstrate a familiarity with a variety of instructional delivery methods including on line learning and social media to provide educational content and opportunities supported by evidencebased research and individual expertise.
  8. Work collaboratively with the Associate Dean Department Chair Program faculty other academic units in CAUSES landgrant programs as well as with District of Columbia agencies and service providers to effectively address DC and national program priorities related to professional Architecture practice.
  9. Contribute to our landgrant mission through outreach and engagement with students Cooperative Extension and key community stakeholders.


Minimum Job Requirements

  1. Terminal degree in Architecture or related field (PhD preferred).
  2. Practice experience in Architecture Urban Planning or a related field.
  3. Demonstrated teaching excellence with three or more years of collegiatelevel teaching experience.
  4. Strong interpersonal skills excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Proven record of teaching research and design thinking/problemsolving skills.
  6. Familiarity with and adherence to the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accreditation standards demonstrating the ability to create courses and student experiential learning experiences that respond to current standards but also anticipate the future and evolving needs of the profession.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and proactive outcomes oriented work in meeting the responsibilities and duties described.


A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following

qualifications:

  1. An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;
  2. A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
  3. At least five 5 years of fulltime teaching experience in an institution of higher education including three 3 years as an Assistant Professor.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

Residency Preference:A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position may be awarded a 10point residency preference over nonDistrict applicants unless the person declines the preference points. If selected the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
