Certified Peer Recovery Specialist

Annual Salary: $32930

Schedule: flexible hours between 5:30 AM and 5:00 PM

Since 1971 the HamptonNewport News Community Services Board has provided a comprehensive continuum of highquality essential and communitybased services to citizens of the Peninsula who are living with a mental illness developmental disabilities and substance use disorders.

Your day as a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist

As a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist at the HamptonNewport News Community Services Board you will play a vital role in providing peer support and advocacy for individuals facing substance use challenges. Your responsibilities include assisting clients with essential physical financial social and recovery needs all in alignment with the SAMHSA MAT Project Grant. You will engage with drugseeking individuals and nonfatal survivors at local hospitals and police department emergency services serving as a catalyst for their seamless transition into treatment services.

By sharing your personal stories of lived experience you will inspire hope and guide clients in accessing both HNNCSB and community resources. Additionally you will facilitate the orientation portion of intakes ensuring clients understand MAT services and helping them complete necessary consents all while fostering a supportive and empowering environment that encourages lasting recovery.

To excel as a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist with the HamptonNewport News Community Services Board candidates should possess a range of essential skills and qualifications. A minimum of 12 months of successful personal recovery experience is crucial demonstrating resilience and understanding of the recovery journey. Completion of the DBHDS 72hour Peer Recovery Specialist Training is required alongside certification from the Virginia Certification Board (VCB) or the National Certification Board.

Previous experience as a Peer Recovery Specialist for at least one year is essential for providing effective support. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are vital for building trusting relationships with clients and facilitating their access to treatment services. Additionally proficiency in using relevant software and tools will aid in tracking client progress and coordinating care.

A valid drivers license is also necessary to transport individuals as needed ensuring they receive the support they require on their recovery path.

The knowledge and skills required for the position are:

  • A minimum of 12 months of successful recovery.
  • Completion of DBHDS 72hour Peer Recovery Specialist Training.
  • A Certified Peer Recovery Specialist from the Virginia Certification Board (VCB) or the National Certification Board
  • At least one year of Peer Recovery Specialist experience.
  • Valid Drivers License. Transports individuals as necessary.
