Job Description
Overview
The Lieutenant (Shift Commander) is responsible for managing the daytoday responsibilities and oversight of their assigned shifts. The incumbent will provide protection and security of patients personnel customers visitors and assets. This position is expected to maintain composure when dealing with subordinates staff and the public under conditions of urgency and pressure situations. This position is considered to be essential and must be able to work mandatory overtime and/or during weather emergencies or other catastrophic events without advance notice.
Responsibilities
- Functions as an area supervisor of security officers. Meets with subordinates to outline tasks and responsibilities. Ensures that all post orders and other assignment details are reviewed and followed established rounds are completed required reports are filed and posts are inspected.
- Appraises performance of assigned staff. Provides feedback coaching and progressive discipline as appropriate. Seeks advice from security management or designated representatives related to performance of employee and department performance management standards. Meets personally with employees and documents coaching and disciplinary actions.
- Manages field training and trains security officers.
- Ensures adequate coverage of all posts and positions. In conjunction with security management assists in the setup of weekly officer schedules by monitoring assigning overtime and initiating needed changes to cover unscheduled absences. Assists in the submission of payroll and personnel information as designated.
- Prepares files and submits various reports as required.
- Resolves minor complaints or conflicts involving members of the Kennedy Krieger Institute community. Notifies security management and other authorities in emergency situations. Investigates Institute security incidents prepares appropriate reports ensures that proper Institute personnel and/or external groups are notified when necessary (e.g. human resources or clinical staff) and directs security officers as needed.
- Meets with security management as needed to provide assurance that all security requirements and responsibilities are being met and quality customer service is being provided.
- Supervises special events and assigned security personnel.
- May provide support in conducting interviews facilitating employee orientation and training and offering recommendations on hiring and termination.
- Performs the duties of a Security Officer as needed. This includes monitoring CCTV and alarm systems and responding to alerts.
- Serve as after hour OnCall team lead on a rotating basis.
Qualifications

EDUCATION:
High school diploma GED or equivalent required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum three 3 years of related security experience is required.
- Previous supervisory security experience preferred.
- Report writing experience required.
- Previous law enforcement work experience military training or successful completion of related training from an accredited college program preferred.
