  • Job Title: Special Education Teacher (Low Incidence Program/TEAM: Transitional Education with Access to Mainstream)
    Reports to: Assistant Director of Special Education
    Terms and Conditions: 10 months 183day school year work calendar.
    FLSA Status: Exempt
    Salary: Per Faculty Senate collective bargaining agreement.

    Qualifications:
    1. Valid Illinois Professional Educators License with Learning Behavior Specialist 1 endorsement.
    2. Minimum 3 years experience in working with students with low incidence disabilities.
    3. Experience in developing and implementing IEPs and Behavior Intervention Plans
    4. Knowledgeable about the IDEA and the laws that govern working with students with disabilities
    5. Knowledgeable about Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) in supporting students emotional and behavioral needs.
    6. Experience in working with students with cognitive emotional and physical disabilities in a high school setting.
    7. Ability to work effectively with school district staff students and parents.

    Position Summary:
    Minimum 3 years teaching experience in Special Education working directly with students with low incidence disabilities such as Autism or Intellectual Disabilities. Experience working with school personnel parents and students to strive for a comprehensive and inclusive learning environment with positive outcomes. Experience with creating age appropriate lessons based on prerequisite skills aligned with grade equivalent and Common Core Standards. Experience with administering Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM).

    Essential Duties: (Other duties may be assigned)
    1. Ability to create write monitor and facilitate IEPs for students on caseload. Actively participate in IEP meetings for students assigned to the caseload.
    2. Develop and implement individualized instruction based on students Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) focusing on functional academics communication daily living skills socialemotional learning and vocational training.
    3. Use evidencebased strategies assistive technology and augmentative communication systems tailored to each students needs.
    4. Adapt curriculum and materials to meet diverse learning styles and levels of cognitive functioning.
    5. Collect and analyze student data to monitor progress and make instructional decisions.
    6. Implement and monitor individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs).
    7. Apply proactive behavior management techniques and deescalation strategies in the classroom and during transitions.
    8. Document behavioral incidents and collaborate with the behavior team or related service staff as needed.
    9. Provide or oversee assistance with personal care tasks such as feeding toileting and hygiene in accordance with student needs and dignity.
    10. Ensure a safe and structured environment including lifting and transferring students when necessary with proper training and equipment.
    11. Plan and facilitate communitybased instruction and life skills activities that promote independence and generalization of skills.
    12. Coordinate transportation and safety planning for offcampus learning opportunities.
    13. Supervise and monitor AM and PM transportation transitions from bus to school and school to bus.
    14. Participate in parent meetings outside of the IEP to support student needs.
    15. Prepare materials and plan daily instruction appropriate to each assigned class.
    16. Establish reasonable expectations keep detailed records for oral and written work and explain grading procedures.
    17. Work collaboratively with occupational therapists physical therapists and speech therapists to promote positive outcomes for students.
    18. Perform those duties relative to pupil accounting assigned by the Administration including the recording of attendance evaluative data etc.
    19. Demonstrate experience with modifying and adapting curriculum and providing instruction for low incidence students.
    20. Develop and administer classroom assessments and report performance to parents dean/counselors and students.
    21. Understand and explain special emergency procedures to students and supervise students during situations calling for them.
    22. Work collaboratively with special education teachers general education teachers and Support Team in understanding the needs of students and counseling students. Effectively supervise and include paraprofessionals in supporting the academic and social emotional needs of students.
    23. Assign and supervise daily duties and instructional responsibilities of teaching assistants and paraprofessionals.
    24. Develop and maintain teaching assistant schedules ensuring adequate coverage for all instructional activities personal care needs and student supervision throughout the school day.
    25. Provide training modeling and feedback to classroom support staff on instructional techniques data collection behavior support strategies and safety protocols.
    26. Be sensitive to physical and learning styles of students with respect to their identified disabilities.
    27. Promote student respect for the rights of others in the classroom.
    28. Recognize safety and health hazards and work to eliminate them.
    29. Support and promote the student activities program by attendance at athletic and activities contests or other schoolrelated events.
    30. Attend department meetings
    31. Maintain positive professional relations with colleagues.
    32. Hold high expectations for all students and demonstrate a deep belief that all students can learn and succeed.
    33. Communicate openly with students staff parents and other stakeholders regarding students achievement and progress in the classroom.
    34. Commit to equity and eliminating systemic obstacles for students of color.


    Employee Performance Evaluation:
    The Assistant Director of Special Education completes job performance evaluations annually.
