The Port of Portlandis hiring two 2
PDX Maintenance Helpers!

Were on the lookout for a Maintenance Helper to join our team at Portland International Airport. If youre passionate eager to learn and excited about contributing to a team this is an opportunity for you! Report to one location consistent work schedule and all the necessary tools are provided.

Your role:As a Maintenance Helper youll be an essential support to the maintenance team assisting with various tasks to ensure the airports infrastructure is wellmaintained. This entrylevel position provides a great opportunity for growth and learning within the dynamic aviation environment.

This position will be assigned to the Landscape Maintenance group. Helpers assist journeyman with all areas of landscape maintenance including turf mowing and edging irrigation startup and repair pruning planting fertilizer application leaf collection and other manual labor. Helpers may be assigned to other work groups depending on operational need. The ideal candidate will possess experience with manual labor landscape maintenance and/or construction and be comfortable working outside with exposure to sun wind and rain.

Note:This is a union represented position; shifts are bid based on seniority. The successful candidate must be available to work any shift that is needing to be filled. Typical schedule for Landscape Maintenance group is 7:00AM 3:30PM Monday Friday.

Essential Job Duties

Primary Job Duties
Landscape Maintenance:

  • Mow grass edge and remove clippings using power equipment;
  • Assist with planting trees shrubs and ground cover;
  • Operate and perform minor maintenance and repairs to specialized tools and power equipment;
  • Assist with pruning and irrigation work.
General Maintenance:
  • Perform routine labor functions;
  • Operate small tools and equipment;
  • Assist with maintenance and repair of pavements fences drainage systems etc.
Vehicle Maintenance:
  • Perform lube oil and filter preventative maintenance services;
  • Change tires and batteries;
  • Perform safety and operational checks on vehicles and equipment;
  • Assist with diagnosis and repairs on vehicles and equipment
Other Job Duties as Assigned
HVAC Maintenance:
  • Perform routine HVAC equipment inspections for preventative maintenance and filter changes;
  • Assist journeyman with equipment repairs and services;
  • Perform routine labor tasks as required at the Central Utility Plant (CUP) and terminal mechanical rooms.
Building Maintenance:
  • Perform maintenance services on bag belt and loading bridge equipment;
  • Assist the journeyman l with building repairs and services;
  • Perform preparatory work and assist with painting and sanding of buildings and equipment;
  • Perform routine labor tasks as required such as escorts and moving terminal furniture.
Storeroom Operations:
  • Assist storeroom personnel with material handling and shipping;
  • Perform parts runs filling pick tickets routine cycle counts;
  • Perform routine labor tasks as required such as escorts and housekeeping.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Course work or equivalent experience in General Vehicle HVAC Building Warehousing and/or Landscape Maintenance; or the equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
  • Maintain a valid state drivers license is required.
    • Class B commercial drivers license at time of hire is preferred; or the ability to obtain one within the probationary period is required. All CDL training costs and licensing fees will be paid for by the Port of Portland.
  • Must successfully pass and maintain clearance of a comprehensive Criminal History Records Check and a Security Threat Assessment for a PDX Security Badge are required.
Demonstrated skills and knowledge:
  • Physically fit and capable of performing a multitude of tasks outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Light duty drivable equipment and gaspowered hand tool operation.
  • Light carpentry painting fencing and sign repairs.
  • Light asphalt and concrete pavement repairs.
  • Driving in snow or on ice; utilizing snow removal equipment.
  • Shows the utmost respect for others and is a proven team player.
  • Learn and perform new skills as needed for the position.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with others.
  • Work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Read instructions and write legibly.
  • Demonstrate commitment to valuing differences among individuals and passion for being inclusive.

Supplemental and Selection Information

SELECTION PROCESS(tentative schedule):

  1. A minimum qualification evaluation of education training and experience of submitted application packets will take place by Human Resources the week of May 5 2025.

  2. A Subject Matter Expert (SME) Panel will perform an evaluation of experience and training taken from your employment application materials including any responses to the supplemental questionnaire.

  3. Our goal is to schedule first round interviews with candidates that successfully passed the SME evaluation step approximately the week of as soon as possible.
